Well the term is used here for surplus of a living wage, because that could also be put towards new equipment, repairs, hiring more staff, etc.
The profits aren't being gatekept here, just allocated where they're most needed.
There would be no CEOs and profits would be given back to the employees through bonuses, or saved in reserve for a rainy day.
We should abolish corporations and hierarchical workplaces.
Instead, we should have many smaller collectives of worker-owned businesses. They would elect managers and a union; the former would keep things organized and on budget, the latter would push for more benefits for the workers.

I get yelled at for saying this but for many hundreds of years people went to university not to get diplomas or be employable but because immersion in the humanities was considered foundational to a good life, and school must return to its original purpose: the joy of learning.
Women's paid and unpaid labour are the backbone of any economy, and it's about time that both are recognized for their value and compensated adequately.
