The NIH continues to be fully halted. 11/11 study sections canceled today, which includes the study section my grant was meant to be reviewed at. This is never ending and so damaging.

Incredible new work from the Macauley lab! Just the beginning of what will be an incredible series of papers that mechanistically interrogates gene x environment in AD.

Tabak was incredibly encouraging to young scientists including myself and a great example of someone who was able to help different sides see their common interests to help bring resolution. I feel his leaving is a sign that reason may have left the building π€¦πΎββοΈ

It sounds weird coming from the CEO of a company that makes 500-mile EVs. But hear him out.
New, from me:
So much is happening, so quickly. The purpose of shock and awe is to bewilder and overwhelm. It is important not to look away, or get discouraged. Try to discern the what is a big and real threat. Here is my best effort to do so. π§΅

Itβs a golden age of disassociation.
You keep doing this.
As many times as it takes.
Without govt funding you simply don't have the community of scientists scattered across the US that helped the US to take the lead in scientific development in the 20th century!
Members of Congress should be all over how this affects their districts!

The assault on NIH is a test for how the national media covers the Trump admin: Trump is shutting down medical research!
That is easy to communicate. Will they treat it as a 5 alarm fire in a way that forces the government to respond, or will they downplay & caveat it?
We just had this whole election cycle about how inflation is the unforgivable political sin, which no other widely felt benefit can counterbalance, and itβs discarded two days into the new administration.
wow, they're already getting rid of unqualified and incompetent employees
For years, execs in auto + tech spun a fantastical future vision in which fleets of robotaxis would imminently replace normal cars.
Cruiseβs demise suggests the wild promises of AI-chatbot operatorsβand companies w/sky-high valuations using themβshould be met w/caution if not outright skepticism.
On the second review, 4/5 reviewers said that we addressed all concerns. Last reviewer said one sentence (same response as their first), so editor rejected with no response to appeals. What was the point of 4 months of revisions (and 10+ months with the manuscript at this one journal)? 2/2
We had a now-published paper reviewed at a different journal. 4/5 reviewers asked for revisions and additional analysis, and the last reviewer asked for all experiments redone. Editor insisted they would consider w/o the last reviewerβs (expensive, >year of time) requests. 1/2

We got aid in Florida from Joe Biden despite this state not only doing zero mitigation for storms but also banning cities from doing their own global warming mitigation
Thank you!
The (free-to-read) newsletter this week is about the fires and visualizations that explain or inform about whatβs unfolding.

Excited to share our new work out in Alzheimer's Research & Therapy! We profiled FAD-causal mutations in PSEN1, PSEN2, and APP using patient-derived iPSC neurons and multiomics (RNA-seq and ATAC-seq) to ascertain regulatory mechanisms associated with disease. alzres.biomedcentral.com/articles/10....
Map showing the number of times a location has burned in SoCal and which kind of fire it was: one burning under Santa Ana winds, or one that was a summer, fuel-driven fire without Santa Ana winds. Malibu area had burned at least 8 times from 1900-2017, and has burned twice now since. Image from Kolden and Abatzoglou (2018): https://www.mdpi.com/2571-6255/1/2/19
Here's the reality about the #LAFires this week: this isn't the first time ANY of these places have burned. Not even close. In 2018, we mapped CA fire history to look at fire frequency across SoCal. Santa Monica Mtns area burns more than anywhere else -- up to once per decade in a given spot. π§΅
Public stuck between an incoming govt that won't help them prepare for climate change (instead preferring to blame DEI), and an insurance industry that is paying attention to climate change but won't insure them

I think it also should be mentioned that the person who really got this going was Rick Caruso, the West Coast Trump/developer who Bass kicked the ass of in the election, and who falsely spread conspiracy theories about fire hydrants in the same radio interview.
