say hello to the Delver- I thought it would be neat, as you’re tunnelling, to come across glassed tubes and distant rumbles that set up an eventual reveal of a massive cryptid whale worm.
Since mining was a central theme, I also pitched different kinds of archeological play

But my favorite, most fearsome children were the Mothlins! I really wanted, with each round of ideas, to expand what a "buglin" could be- stretch the shape language to encompass new vibes across our rogues gallery. Mothlins were big win in that sense!

Trying to push scale and find an appealing design for a mini boss encounter and “rhino beetle centaur monster with orca coloration” just clicked
Then stick bugs turned into whole tree bugs! I figure I get at least ONE hammerhead inspired monster per project right? This was the guy

But pets & critters were far from the only weird little guys running around Project Dragon- we had a rogues gallery of enemies to fight as well!
We wanted monsters that preserve the cosy vibe of our pastoral starting zone. Buglins came out of that desire- ant goblins here to ruin your picnics!

Our 5th of 5 Inner Lands heroes was Zent! A shy gaffling kid surrounded by animal friends, his quests unlocked the pet system and critter capture and he was...*just a little guy*, you know?

Some days as a concept artist, your whole task is “imagine fish”- and I really never want to waste those days! It’s a lot easier to imagine players losing themselves in something like a fishing system when you know you had fun putting your whole attention into designing it

In addition to pets, we had smaller critters, and a set of elemental spirits who inhabited the game world, linking to different systems of play. I’ve always been the kind of player that crams the camera into the corners to watch the fireflies flicker, and I wanted our game to reward that scrutiny

I will highlight a few personal favorite ideas! The False Gnome was an instant celebrity on the team for his element of surprise. Rocca's rotating slot machine of facial expressions, the Uncanny's Labyrinth-inspired hand-face, and Mudpuppy's upturned planter motifs are all ideas I'm still proud of
