We certainly do need to upgrade our grids for a number of reasons, the biggest being the infrastructure is decades out of date. But countries with a faster EV adoption rate than the US/Canada have had no problems with meeting demand.
With all due respect, it is just math. Anytime I have seen this claim the example they use is people all plugging their EVs in when they get home which is peak usage time. EVs can be plugged in then, but will not start charging until after 10PM, when there is a huge surplus of generating capacity.
This is an excellent development. Every watt matters, and this is a cheap way to get more solar into places it would not otherwise be deployed.

This myth keeps being propagated, but the fact that the EU has been handling it fine (and they are shifting to EVs faster than us). Most EV charge at night when there is an excess of generating capacity. In fact, a lot of utilities will give you a cheaper rate to charge your EV after 10PM.
