if we can't tax people making roughly the median household income, we are not ever going to have a proper welfare state. in Sweden the payroll tax alone is 31 percent
So it wasn't exactly a Stephen Glass situation. More like Elizabeth Bruenig's recent measles piece.
The subhed for the article is apparently "He is the singer for a great band, but he's a bit... generic. Hell, in order to make him a great mythic rock-'n'-roller, it's almost as if you have to make half the story up. So that's what we did. But only half."

Is the backing track... Childish Gambinoβs Bonfire? Or is my ear for music just really poor?
missed this incredible journalism news: @liberalcurrents.com reached their $500k fundraising goal!! that means full time staff, further building out the site, and funding for good people doing important work without billionaires. hell yea.
A post like the one above with negligible engagement on a campaign page that no one cares about that doesnβt tag any of Platnerβs accounts is meaningfully distinct from a hypothetical identical post that went viral and had tagged his campaign.
I will clarify that my point was made in response to the criticism of Platner for not calling out Wardβs (horrible and antisemitic) post. How valid a criticism that is does in fact depend on how many people have seen the post, because if his staff had no clue it existed, how could they call it out?
I will note that the post shared above has a total of 8 reactions and Ward appears to be an essentially fringe/negligible βcandidateβ β most of the posts on the campaign page are just liked by himself.
It is genuinely odd that the president actually called to release government files on aliens a week before he started a war with Iran. Next there'll be folks carrying gallons of PCP in the nation's public parks.

It's funny to me when people who love to go on about second order effects of economic policies and the challenges of central planning without local knowledge suddenly drop all of that when it comes to foreign policy.
they should allocate $100B to the BLS, in my expert opinion
Iran, Cuba, ICE, and the economyβjust some of the topics covered by @chancephillips.bsky.social today in the latest Opposition Report. Catch up on Februaryβs news by reading it www.liberalcurrents.com/the-oppositi...
What happened to the Google-California deal is particularly disappointing to be honest. You had a private company committed to match state funding and give $55 million to local journalism, and then the state backed out...

You've got plenty of credentials! For one, you've written for Liberal Currents
WATCH: Gregory Bovino asks journalist Amanda Moore to bake him a pie.
βPerhaps you could make the pie for us,β Bovino tweeted at Moore.
Then it got even weirder.
My great friend Shawn Gude has been working on a new biography of Eugene Debs for years now and I'm so excited to share it is now available for pre-order!!! bookshop.org/p/books/amer...
Yeah, I wasnβt necessarily conceding the classification, just pointing out that *even if it were true that Norwayβs economy only functioned due to oil money*, we have plenty of examples that similar institutions function sans that particular money spigot.
Today, @mckay4senate.bsky.social urges us not to forget what Elon Musk do to USAID, something that is still likely to have the highest body count of the administrationβs actions. McKay documents just what Elon has done in detail www.liberalcurrents.com/what-elon-ha...
Norway does have sizable oil/natural gas revenues, but none of the other Nordic countries really do. And yet all have fairly comparable economic systems.
we have an awful lot of working-age immigrants who will pay taxes and then not benefit from large parts of the US welfare state. If we had a lot of over 65 y.o. immigrants eligible for Social Security, the story would be different
IMO this is true if, for instance, retirement benefits require working in a country for a specific length of time before collecting them. If they didnβt, then immigration of non-working populations could easily be a drain gov wise. Immigration is good for the American welfare state right now because
I like the low poly models, but do agree that the textures are a bit rough. There's a YouTuber who spent a few years retexturing Majora's Mask though, and I think it looks great even considering the burgeoning 3D.

Okay but two of those four games are Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. So. Pretty solid console all things considered in my opinion
have you ever read one of my Discworld QOTDs and thought, hey, I should really get around to reading those books?
good news! the full series is back on Humble Bundle - itβs Kobo but itβs pretty easily to transfer those to your preferred e-reader
you wonβt regret it
Jesse Jackson Jr. also had an under appreciated sense of comedic timing. Watch his fake sermon on SNL.π
A sign that bourgeois and increasingly nonreligious Americans have less respect for the importance of marriage tbh. (/j)
Maybe you can argue that these always need some sort of explicit disclaimer up front/that calling it a "reported essay" or whatever was a mistake? As in, it's pretty obviously not nonfiction as such (despite Bruenig saying that in the Nieman Lab interview) - just fiction meant to convey facts.
