Because public health is the foundation of prevention.
Donβt make the mistake of assuming that βhidingβ a gun or keeping it somewhere out-of-reach will keep a child from getting their hands on it. Every day, there are far too many tragic incidents across the U.S. when kids get their hands on guns that adults believed were stored securely, but werenβt.

HHS Secretary RFK Jr. is a danger to the publicβs health and should resign or be fired, says APHA. In just a few short weeks, his actions on vacccines, fluoride and other public health science have shown how wrong he is for the job. Read & share our statement: apha.org/news-and-med...
Y'all - check in on your public health friends today.

Hey public health friends - you doing ok?
"*Black pregnant people* are more likely to be murdered than pregnant people of other races."
"Homicide is a leading cause of maternal mortality, and most homicides are committed using firearms. Studies report that β[w]omen in the US are more likely to be murdered during pregnancy or soon after childbirth than to die from the three leading obstetric causes of maternal mortality.β "
Quoted from the article (select links from the article):
"Gun violence is a public health crisis in the United States. Maternal mortality is also a public health crisis in this country. But it is the twin crises of gun violence and its impact on maternal mortality that are rarely discussed."
If you're reeling from Trump's ongoing attacks, please check out my latest piece about what trans people are up against and how we (as in, all of us, including doctors and clinicians) can resist these assaults. Includes commentary from @dreanyc123.bsky.social and @deanspade.bsky.social.
We are always thrilled to see (commercial) tobacco-free generation seeds sprouting in the US.
Cute winter background with birdies, twigs, and snowflakes. Text: some new happenings in washington dc remind us that we can call our senators and representatives and share our expertise as public health professionals.
Snowflake, winter animals with blue background. Text: Recent attempts to shut down evidence-based public health programs and funding, implement vaccine denial at the highest levels of US public health administrations, remove all mention of racism and intersecting oppressions in public health interventions, and denying the humanity and existence of transgender children and adults may be a shock to your system, as it is to ours. So what can we do?
Blue winter animals with snowflakes. Text: call the US Capitol switchboard 202-224-3121. Center voices in your community. Share your expertise. Then tell your colleagues and friends to call, too. Give them some talking points and encouragement - understand if they have too much going on.
Winter blue background with animals and snowflakes. Text: For those of us in the public health community, this is a critical responsibility. Weβve been listening to underserved communities, we have studied history and understand how public health has improved the health and well-being of communities. (Though not always perfectly.) Public health is vital to the continued health and safety of our most vulnerable.
Not everything is simple these days but calling your elected people in Washington DC is pretty close. Look up their office number on the interwebs or call the Capitol Switchboard and ask to be connected. Share your expertise in a nice voice mail.
Black text on white background. It reads: With you, for you. WHO remains committed to health for all.

For everyone. Everywhere.
The first in a series of four graphics: Cursive font in black that says "Great American Smokeout" with a red crossed out burning cigarette below and the date November 21, 2024 in black below that. This is all in front of a grey outline of all 50 US states. The background is cream color.
Second of four posts: In black cursive font: "the Great American Smokeout" above black block text that says "began in 1974 as "don't smoke day" in Minnesota, organized by a newspaper editor, and expanded nationally in 1977" then one line down, still above the halfway point, in block text: "On that first nationwide event, about 1 million smokers participated by quitting for a day". The bottom half of the graphic looks like a newspaper print with a graphic of a hard pack of cigarettes.
Third of four images: on a cream background, black block text that says: "Smoking rates in the US have dropped significantly since the 1980s, partly due to campaigns like the smokeout. Despite this: Smoking still causes 1 in 5 deaths annually & Lung cancer remains the top cancer killer with 80% of cases attributed to smoking" Below the text is a graphic of two lungs - one health and pink and one gray with cigarette butts inside of it.
Final graphic of four: Black block text that says: Each step toward being smoke-free is a victory for your health and future whether it's for a day or a lifetime". It's on a cream background with faint cursive above and below that says "the great american smokeout November 21, 2024"
Hello commercial tobacco prevention friends in the US! How's everyone feel about the Great American Smokeout 2024? πAnyone celebrating with their organization or know someone who's using today to kickstart their quitting journey?
Over on our Instagram, we posted in celebration.
Trans rights are human rights.
Thank you so much!
Hi! We're based allll the way over in Oregon, USA, but we love a good CDoH story, especially if it's about commercial tobacco. Add us? π TY!
And a gif (alt-text included!) for the not-algorithm but to cat(ch) your eyes on this lovely Monday.
Somehow we missed this awesome news back in August. Might be that we're located on the west coast and don't have Stop&Shops. (More likely: we probably were busy soaking up the last sunny days before rainy season.)
Interesting / good news on the "Commercial Tobacco is Bad" and "YES Retailers Can Succeed Without Selling Tobacco" fronts. Stop&Shop adds their stores to a growing list of chains that just don't sell tobacco products anymore.
Hi! Can you add us? Not only do we have public health in our name, we work on public health policy and advocacy! (Mainly commercial tobacco prevention)

Hello! We love to see this. Would you please add our org? Thank you!
We are up and running at Upstream Public Health's bsky page!
This morning, I changed our handle to our domain - a dreaded by not terrible task - and now we're ready to learn and share public health news and to talk shit about Big Tobacco.
bsky.app/profile/upst...
This is the tutorial we used: bsky.social/about/blog/4...
Our second post is to say that we changed our Blue Sky handle to our own custom domain. It wasn't hard - you can do it, too! - but we will consider this a major accomplishment for years to come. (it's up there with our favicon battle of 2019.)
