Well, @digbie.bsky.social, that sounds like a DSTV topic. I'm notoriously unengaging with deeper thoughts on short post formats like this. Too hard to dig into complex thoughts quickly and in bits. I do think your hunch is right, particularly if the idea of development is tied solely to capitalism.

If there was one thing that should be banned in (not-so) emerging tech, it's wearables like glasses that record everything. What benefits could possibly outweigh the risks of this in the wild?

I would think usually it’s circumstance - something pushes people to want to leave. Then what happens where they land is different - do they seek out people who are familiar? Others might not and avoid it.
