this goes beyond game design, really. for example: it's the desire of the Tech Bro to have that one idea that is so incredible, so "disruptive," that they will be venerated simply for having it, and reap all the benefits that actually come from hours and hours of labor from a lesser "other"

it is a bourgeois dream to come up with an idea that is so brilliant that a lower caste falls over themselves to make it happen, when the truth in a just world is that no idea on its own is truly worth more than the labor and resources that make it possible to utilize

people pointed at the black/white polarity mechanic and said "it's GENIUS!" and gave it outsized praise for it on the strength of that idea

but Ikaruga is not good because of this mechanic's existence
it's good because it is impeccably designed to utilize it thoroughly from start to finish
