The Science Behind Mary Shelley's Frankenstein
Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein (1818) exists at the borders of Gothic horror and science fiction. Much of what she wrote in that novel...
The daughter of William Godwin and Mary Wollstonecraft, and the wife of Percy Shelley, Mary was exposed to many of the latest scientific ideas of the time, including the idea that matter might be animated into life through chemical and/or electrical means mycandles.blogspot.com/2023/03/the-...

Helga Estby's Walk Across America
A suffragist marches coast to coast to save the family farm.
I'd never heard of Helga & Clara Estby before this week. Now that I have, I've begun reading all I can about the mother & daughter who walked across the US in 1896 to save their family farm.

A black-and-white historical portrait photograph of Edmée Chandon, the pioneering French astronomer (1885–1944), shown as a young woman. She has short, curly dark hair styled in a bob with soft volume, adorned with a dark headband featuring two prominent vertical barrette-like pins or clips. Her expression is calm and direct, gazing straight at the camera with a subtle, composed demeanor. She wears a dark velvet or satin dress with a high neckline accented by a white lace ruffled collar or jabot, and a small decorative brooch or button at the center. The image has a classic early 20th-century studio style with soft lighting, a plain background, and slight vignetting, evoking elegance and determination.
Astronomer Edmée Chandon died #OTD in 1944.🔭
She was the first professional female astronomer in France, working at the Paris Observatory from 1908 until her retirement in 1941.
She is one of the 72 pioneering women whose names are to be engraved on the Eiffel Tower.

This image depicts the premises of the Hull Anti-Mill Industrial Society, one of the earliest consumer co-operatives in the United Kingdom.
Founded in 1795, the society was established by local people in Hull during a period of high flour prices and food adulteration caused by the war against France. The members raised funds to build their own tower windmill to ensure a supply of high-quality flour at near cost price. The society was so successful that in 1810, commercial millers took them to court, labeling the co-op a "nuisance". A jury famously ruled in favour of the society in 1811, stating they "considered poverty a still greater nuisance". (Co-operative Corn Milling: Self-help
During the Grain Crises of the Napoleonic Wars: Jennifer Tann)
The grain crisis at the end of the 1790s due in part to the war against France caused real anger due to the high flour prices charged by commercial millers and also cases of food adulteration. As a result several early co-operative ventures were formed . The first Anti Mill Society, was founded

From a very productive time when I took every opportunity to paint directly from the subject, usually putting my bike on its stand and resting my drawing board on the handlebars. Magdalene bridge is crossing the river, punts are for hire and it wouldn't be complete without some ducks are happily swimming around.
One of my Cambridge on-the-spot watercolour drawings from nearly 30 years ago. This was done from the riverside board walk that leads to Quayside. I don't sketch in town any more - too crowded plus lack of stamina!

I've been revisiting Ronny Salerno's book: Fading Ads of Cincinnati, on this soggy day. If you haven't had a chance to see Ronny's work, it is a visual day trip. And he's a really nice human being, too. I had the delight of working with him on a feature story years upon years ago.

I didn't think we still needed to discuss this.
World Book Day isn’t a purity test. Comics count. Annuals count. Football mags count. If a child is choosing words, stories, characters, facts-then they’re reading. Gatekeeping ‘real books’ is how you make reading feel arduous. Let them in.
