Labour’s delay on conversion practices ban is ‘dangerous’, campaigners say Exclusive: Failure to act sends message ‘our safety is optional’, says coalition of LGBTQ+, faith and mental health organisations The Labour government’s continued delay in delivering its promised UK-wide ban on so-called conversion practices is disappointing, dangerous and sends the message that the safety of LGBTQ+ people is optional, according to campaigners. In a strongly worded statement, Saba Ali of the Ban Conversion Therapy Coalition, said their message to the government was clear: “Stop the delay and deliver the promise. It’s been seven years since a ban was first pledged, yet LGBT+ people are still being subjected to degrading, abusive practices while the government dithers. Continue reading...

‘Who voted for this?’: Why the migration debate needs more honesty, and a plan Labour promises cuts to migration – but without a plan, care homes, hospitals and families will suffer

Migration didn’t break the care system. It held it up.

Yvette Cooper says overseas recruitment must stop – but without rebuilding wages, housing and training, then what?

STANDING TOGETHER: A UNITED FRONT FOR TRANS RIGHTS
As the organisers of the UK's largest Pride events in Birmingham, Brighton, London and Manchester, we come together today in unequivocal solidarity with our trans community.
We are united not only in message, but in purpose.
At a time when trans rights in the UK are under growing attack, our resolve has never been stronger: we will not allow progress to be undone.
We will not stand by as the dignity, safety, and humanity of our trans siblings are debated, delayed, or denied.
What is happening here in the UK is not isolated. It is part of a disturbing global trend-from the banning of Pride events in Hungary to anti-trans legislation in the United States-where LGBTQ+ rights are being systematically rolled back.
The UK must not follow this path of regression. Instead, it must rise as a global leader in human rights and equality.
The recent ruling by the UK Supreme Court to exclude trans women from the definition of the term 'woman' underscores the urgent need for immediate action. In this moment, we choose to stand firmer, louder, and prouder in demanding change that protects and uplifts trans lives.
That is why this year, we are collectively suspending political party participation in our Pride events.
Know that this is not a symbolic gesture. It is a direct call for accountability and a refusal to platform those who have not protected our rights. We demand real commitments and measurable progress. The Pride movement was born from protest, and we must continue to embody that spirit with intention and urgency.

To move forward, we need more than promises. We need every political party to stand unequivocally with every member of the LGBTQ+ community, and to centre the voices of trans people in policy, practice, and public life. Collectively, we call for:
• Full and enforceable protections under the Equality Act
• Timely and dignified access to NHS gender-affirming healthcare
• A reformed, accessible Gender Recognition Certificate process
• Sustainable funding for trans-led services and support organisations across the UK
This is the minimum. Anything less is not allyship, it is abandonment.
To those in power: when you demonstrate true solidarity and tangible commitment to trans rights, we will stand with you. Until then, we will continue to speak truth to power and fight for a future where every trans person can live safely, freely, and proudly.
As Pride events across the UK face mounting challenges, our resolve only grows stronger. We will not be silenced. We will not be divided. Together, we will build a national movement rooted in justice, unity, and unapologetic pride.
Now, more than ever, we need everyone to show up for trans lives and show up for Pride.

2 million older people now have some unmet need for social care

Age UK’s research found 2 million elderly people are unable to meet care needs due to lack of staffing in the sector. Today’s announcement threatens any chance of filling this essential skills shortage, all to lean into a culture war against Farage. It’s nonsensical

BREAKING: GMB Union says “Scrapping care visas will be potentially catastrophic. Care is utterly reliant on migrant workers and there's still over 130,000 vacancies.

"it’s just austerity dressed up as border control"
Excellent article. I don't know whether I agree with the author's suggestion we are over reliant on immigration, however they make many great points. IF immigration must be reduced, what is the plan to replace the labour immigration provides us?

If Labour won’t defend the principle of immigration, it’ll keep losing the argument, and voters. Yvette Cooper’s interview with Kuenssberg showed just how far the party's shifted.

Read how Labour is retreating on immigration without a plan.

Letter: When 23% wins a seat, First Past the Post is failing us Letter to the editor

Only 23% of votes cast. That’s all it took to win a council seat.

In some wards, fewer than 1 in 10 of the electorate backed the winner.

What does that say about our democracy?

Which is also absurd. It's because they're acting like the conservatives that they're losing people to reform, conservatives were voted out after all. They're only enabling reform to go further and be nastier. They need proper labour policies which will protect and care for people to win back votes

The claim by Yvette Cooper that there is a link between immigration and higher levels of inactivity (related to sickness and disability) has absolutely no basis in evidence or data.

This is the most absurd thing I've heard in a while. International care workers keep the care sector afloat. We have crisis in care which is only going to get worse, and they want to reduce the number of qualified people available to work in the sector? Bonkers.

Some Labour insiders see a silver lining in the rise of Reform: that it may help unite the left despite grumblings from voters about Starmer.
An MP said they were confident they would "be able to squeeze more of the Green vote" at the next election "because of Farage".

remained at their current polling level, the MP said that every time they met a Green-inclined voter on the doorstep, they would say: "It's fine if you want to vote Green, but you'll have Nigel Farage in Downing Street."

Labour insiders, listen carefully, this is not enough. Why would a voter vote Reform-lite to stop Reform getting into No. 10? If you want to squeeze Green votes you need to match Green policies. Be a centre-left party again.
