The seductive promise of AI, the siren's song that lures so many people with smart suits and MBAs onto treacherous rocks, is that it promises "something for nothing". This magic technology can replace any employee and make the remaining ones more productive for free.

One problem: it's bollocks.

I'll say it: agentic AI is a remarkable technology and it should be shut down at once. It's the worst type of "black box". People are using it to access all kinds of protected information AND THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT IT'S DOING BEHIND THE SCENES.

I seriously think the only one who is competent is Vought and that guy is comprehensively terrifying. Pure sadist.

This is one of those mornings where I wish I could just sod off and read Guy de Maupassant for a couple of hours.

I'm going to be in Pittsburgh in June so I'll put this on my list!

Current events have managed to become the perfect mixture of absurd and terrifying.

Next week contains both St. Patrick's Day and the Ides of March. The first is a terrible day to go out if you're going to be anywhere near a drinking establishment and the second is a terrible day to go out if you're Julius Caesar.

I will never forget listening to that interview she did with Matthew Sweet. Sweet was immaculately polite and completely destroyed her.

LADY IN THE LAKE is an oddity. A Philip Marlowe film where Robert Montgomery made the eccentric decision that he would use a POV where you never see Philip Marlowe. Worth watching for Audrey Totter's slightly unhinged performance.

Someone I know lives in a "listed building" and from the way he describes it, it sounds a bit like a jail sentence. If he wants to do ANYTHING to the house there's a whole layer of bureaucracy that he has to deal with for permission.

I adore old cinemas like that. I bet the acoustics are surprisingly good.

This is rather pleasing to me. I knew that Odeon is or was a cinema chain but I did *not* know that the original Nickelodeon was a theater in Boston where a show would cost $.05.

My model is happy with the drawing so far. This pleases me well.

This is absolutely correct. When I lived in Germany I once visited Bremerhaven for work and was awestruck by how massive those vessels are.

Do you know how challenging it is to make up a fake pub name that *doesn't* already actually exist?

What a pleasure it is to make art by hand, to draw a lovely friend whom you like and to make an actual artifact β€” a real, durable object.

Little things like this make life worth living.

The US aristocracy has a "Citizens United" problem. They can purchase all the politicians they want now but if you get a critical mass of people who can't afford food, they tend to notice the zillionaires who are hoarding all the resources.

You're on to something here. It's like when he's playing the "invisible accordion" β€” that is an absolute tell that not only is he winging it, he knows that he's spouting bullshit.

I think I'm going to give PRESSURE a go. Brendan Fraser as Ike is non-intuitive and clever casting. I'm intrigued to see Damian Lewis as Monty. Lewis has a knack for playing *really* off-putting characters who you're still engaged with.

Right! first sketch sent to model to see what she makes of it. I should take care of the bins now.

I love Jacques Tati. As a tallish man (6'2") he gave the world the gift of *our* physical comedic problems.

Take my word for it, if you're over six foot tall, staircases (particularly in older houses) are out to GET you.

(I heartily approve.)

Honestly, I'm not entirely certain they *ARE* truly legal. Meta's standard operating procedure is that if they do something egregious enough to make the law take notice, they deploy their battalion of lawyers to say "Oops!"

β€’ A good cup of tea, properly made.
β€’ A beautiful book with a Smyth-sewn binding and good paper.
