Enjoying a rare good visibility moment riding down a substantially < 30° slope in Langtaufers, near (snow)bo(a)rders of IT/South Tyrol & AT/Tyrol & SUI/Graubünden
I'm super happy to see this one out!
For those interested, please take a look at the well-prepared Jupyter notebook with the model Nick prepared (link in paper) and start playing with the model yourself!
Best avalanche app of all!
(though also curious to see how the www.skitourenguru.com plans for an app materialize)
I've seen several Big Climate Accounts™ post about how the recent winter storm was made worse by climate change. It's a convenient narrative.

But what is "worse"? Colder temperatures? More snow? More freezing rain? Is there any primary literature supporting the idea of worse snowstorms?

Who says January is boring? We had a festive end of the month at the Info Coffee at the img.univie.ac.at!
I realized it's been a while since I last posted a cloud photo. There it is, a panorama of this very dry but cold winter in the NE Alps, together with some cool lenticularis and stratiform clouds from the edge of action of a Mediterranean cyclone...
This would be a very good week for anyone who has not already abandoned the Mercator projection for maps of the world to do so
boah....better than my views of it in Kiruna in October!
A bit with a delay, but it was quite an aurora night in midlatitudes...even visible from Vienna a tiny bit (no good photos though)...here seen from a mountain in E Austria.
24 hours more time to submit your "Upgoer5" talk. Using only 1000 most common words in English! Last year was super fun!
(note: it does not count towards the abstract limit, you can still have a normal one)

A map of the world showing the modeled trend of large hail between 1950 and 2023.
Is damaging hail getting worse? An ESSL-led study published in Nature Geoscience finds that very large hail is modelled to occur most frequently in South America, the United States, and South Africa, but Europe shows the strongest increase in very large hail frequency. doi.org/10.1038/s415...
Look at those values close to -30°C today morning!
Annual pilgrimage to the computer gods done.
Better do it early in the year, and hope for their mercy for the rest of it :)
And here the nice sound of bora in TS
After the snow-bringing dark bora aka bora scura in Trieste/Trst, a colorful last sunset of the vacation

Christmas magic is when you suddenly get a substantial chunk of your supercomputing cluster for the km-scale global climate simulations; Thank you @asc.ac.at !

it answers a lot of questions we asked you during your colloquium :)
A little bit of föhn today
Did Hunga Tonga eruption cool or warm the climate? Is it still influencing it? Abig report on it is out!
Including contributions from our Viennese colleague @kuchaale.bsky.social
Need just one item from the picture for the next few days, and let's hope for some usable snow after that
Finally getting out of the fog for a while!
Reporting nebel, not hochnebel tonight. Above 350 m altitude is a nice starry night.
And below the enlighted Viennese nebel sea.
I was wondering where our students got the term 'polar vortex' for tropospheric phenomena. As per their citations, the Wikipedia page describes the 'tropospheric polar vortex' even more prominently as the stratospheric one. I think someone should adapt that.

Good morning Kärnten/Koroška!
Ok, so it’s not all doom and gloom.
I remember when the median projected warming was much higher than it is today!
We’re moving in the right direction — just very, very slowly.
