a pine tree with bugs hanging all around it. at the very top is a dragonfly-like meganeura with open wings, circling the base is the giant millipede arthropleura. on the branches sit various insects and circular pine cones.

Great news! Plesionectes longicollum is a new genus and species of plesiosaur from Holzmaden, Germany.

This paleoart features two Plesionectes hunting near a colony of Seirocrinus.

Digital painting by Peter Nickolaus, 2025.

Many people are marginally familiar with Pleistocene island faunas. Tiny elephants and deer, giant swans and tortoises etc.
However the Late Miocene/Pliocene of Italy was also host to a unique island fauna. This is Gargano island home of the terror hedgehogs and so much more.

All the people who are crying about JWE3 using generative AI on the scientists faces have not played JWE2 and are just crying for attention :/
It's understandable people are concerned about ai but blindly lashing out whenever it's mentioned is just dumb and inconsiderate towards the devs

We're proud to reveal our new posters! A lot of effort went into the big mural-style poster especially. These will soon all be shipped out to backers who ordered them, and eventually we'll open an online store where you can buy them as well!

an Echidnacaris ventures into shallow water. however, it's chosen a bad time to as the shoreline is currently experiencing a red tide, a rise in excess nutrients has caused dinoflagellates and other kinds of algae to grow out of control, staining the water a deep orange and releasing harmful toxins

Echidnacaris is a kind of radiodont, very primitive and extinct marine arthropods that swam using rows of fins on the sides of their body. Echidnacaris was a filter-feeding radiodont, using its bristled feeding apendages to capture small prey to bring to its mouth. it's especially weird compared to other radiodonts as it had eyes that werent on stalks and had eyebrow sclerites to block overhead sunlight, implying it lived in a very well lit environment

Echidnacaris!! ive been meaning to draw one for quite a while now given how especially weird it is even for radiodont standards (imo at least). i should really draw more radiodonts ngl

Tiny thumbnail sketches of Triceratops, the most famous three-horned dinosaur. The detail shown is about half the size of a business card.

Specimen PVL 6386, a Sebecidae indet. from the Lumbrera Formation (Eocene, Argentina). A nearly complete articulated skull with jaws and three cervical vertebrae in exceptional state of preservation.
Traditionally referred to as cf. Sebecus sp. but possibly closer to other genera.

Work-in-progress black-and-white pencil drawing of a half-underwater scene in a river mouth at the edge of the Caspian Sea, with a huge Beluga Sturgeon attempting to suck in and swallow one of two Caspian tiger cubs which are following their mother across the water.

I am still working on this, but month-specific art (and pesky schoolwork) means it may be a little while before it’s done and colored. Yes those are Tigers. #holocene #wildlife #sturgeon
