You can have the best armed forces in the history of the world, but if you are an incompetent criminal without a plan, you can still lose a war, and rather quickly.
Or he has a grandkid doing the world competition circuit? The price is about what these go for these days, but a surprise nonetheless.
This is why I just can't get through most of these books. Always want to give a popular book/author a chance, but I usually have to let them go halfway through.
Note that the picture is Rebecca Bradley, not Chris Taylor...
Yep. I got a sh*tty plastic clock for tenure and I've recently learned that former colleagues are getting a university-themed blanket at our former place of employment at 25 years instead of a rocking chair (GF got the chair, which is nice--we cover the U crest with a blanket).
This song and the fish cheer at Woodstock... RIP CJM.
Heard a WONDERFUL performance of the 3rd yesterday morning (with K-D Masur conducting)! Coincidentally, I also have his dad's Schumann recordings, which are some of my favorites.
Attended a Milwaukee Symphony matinee yesterday (Augustin Hadelich, soloist). As often happens, there were a number of youngsters attending with parents (as well as several school orchestras). The young violinist next to me had stars in her eyes when I asked if she'd enjoyed the concert.
Same. Thanks for the heads up!
Reverend Jesse Jackson called on each of us to be heralds of change, to be messengers of hope; to step forward and say βSend meβ wherever we have a chance to make an impact.
How fortunate we were that Jesse Jackson answered that call. What a great debt we owe to him.
Great-grandpas were farmers (dad/mom) and railroad workers (dad/mom). One of the farmers also worked for the railroad. The Irish railroad worker (mom) eventually got a good job as a county auditor in Lima OH.
Bookkeeper/artistic engraver (dad) & civil engineer (mom). The former died in 1927 so I never met him (but have some beautiful engraved silverware). I was the 1st grandchild & remember the other (tho he died in β61). He worked for the WPA in OH in the β30s & guess that sparked my WPA arts research.
Where I grew up (in the '60s and '70s), everybody's mom did this to save $$. We all grew up eating this way, pre-Hamburger Helper (which my mom never served). The bros should talk to their grandmothers and great-grandmothers. Sheesh!
Picture of dried beans (Rancho Gordo) and their shipping box. Quarterly stash and we're looking forward to cooking them! Linoleum counter, dining area in the background. Yes, the white dinos on the table have paper umbrellas--don't yours?
Happy Day!
Stumpy!
Kinda looks like Ron J from the back, but I think heβs a teetotaler.
Basketball (then the Dem response while waiting for local news)
Democratic response is excellent (did not watch the SOTU BS).
All from Minnesota. Love to see it.
Came here to say this (from Wisconsin). Plus, then there's room to park again once they're done.
Surprised to see Teddy again, since his family sent protests about the recent anti-environmental/wilderness BS, as I recall
A+ State of the Union counterprogramming by TCM.
Watching the Brewers' pre-season game on MLB Network. Looks like a high school game that is being shot on an iPhone. Hope the Brewers settle the broadcast situation soon, esp for those of us in the MKE area who already pay $$$ for cable and will not buy a subscription to their new network.
And he just texted a picture of his location, so I know he's okay... Did I mention we're old?
My dear spouse is out on his bike on this sunny morning (I'm just back from the grocery). Temp = 18F, wind chill = 5F, lightly spitting snow flurries. Bless his heart, he loves riding (& is bundled up enough to avoid freezing). Glad I bought the heated gloves & blaze orange balaclava for Xmas! β€οΈ
Happy Birthday!
Not sure if this was the original plan, but I'm delighted that Terry, Tara, and Johnny are commentators for the Olympics closing ceremonies. Perhaps NBC has been reading their social media & noticed that many of us enjoy their avoidance of constant chatter, while providing excellent commentary.
BTW, learned that soloist came in on 2-days notice from London. Played today & Saturday nite in MKE. Sunday she's playing the Brahms in Germany (after an afternoon rehearsal). Bonus: airline lost her bags, so she borrowed dress & shoes. I'm a good musician, but how to keep pieces ready to do this?!
Yes, we are likely the youngest subscription-holders at the orchestra's two matinee series. Great music, not driving through 8 years of I-94 construction in the dark!
