He sells cork. That’s how he feeds his family. Then, he has a small plot that his grandfather left him so he makes around 120 cases a year. And whenever it occurs to him to do so, he sends 20 or so cases to America. And I am so happy we were able to pick up a few!

Which brings me to Jerome Despesse from Cornas. In a world where Cornas has an embarrassment of riches in terms of Champions (Allemand, Clape, etc.), I prefer Despesse above all. The only reason he isn’t famous, allocated, and twice the price is because making wine is not what he does for a living.

And no one seems to care. Now, let me clear, wine people care. Specifically, and mostly, wine people who WORK in the wine industry. There is no bigger delta between the affections of those in the wine industry and the interest of the general wine consuming public than Northern Rhone Syrah.

This is where Syrah reaches its zenith. Appellations like Hermitage, Cote-Rotie, and Cornas are populated with farmers who craft wines which age glacially and cut like The Mistral, the cold wind which blows down from the North. Proper Northern Rhone should feel like barely contained wildness.
