Q: Where does Chris Van Dusen get his story ideas? π‘
A: Sometimes a picture inspires a story, like Down to the Sea with Mr. Magee. Childhood memories can spark ideas, as with If I Built a Car. Articles in magazines have inspired stories like The Circus Ship, and even dreams can lead to a new idea.
Q: How long does it take Chris Van Dusen to create a book? π€
A: About a year. Chris does not write stories from start to finish. He mostly works in rhyme, a few lines at a time. If he wrote straight through, it might take a couple of months with revisions. Illustrations can take nine months. βοΈ
Did you know? Chris Van Dusen didnβt have video games or computers for entertainment, so he and his brothers spent hours drawing. While one brother sketched intricate war scenes and another drew lifelike animals, Chris focused on aliens, robots, and monsters. βοΈ
A young reader named Eve asked Chris Van Dusen at every signing to include a character with an insulin pump. She has diabetes and wears one, and it finally fit in If I Built a Town. You can spot it on the characterβs thigh, just like Eveβs. π
In If I Built a Town by Chris Van Dusen, Jack uses his big imagination to redesign his town into something truly incredible. ποΈ
