Part 3 of the blog series underway - will be posted in a couple of weeks. One of Steinitz's last great games.

I hate to think how much the entire archive might be worth. I would have loved to go to Bamberg and spend a month with the whole thing. Just the most amazing collection.
Obviously! I am amazed it took you so long to realise such a straightforward link!!π€£.
Ah, happy memories. Correspondence chess post cards and Reg Gillman.
An exciting discovery in the @englishchess.bsky.social Library: 2 bundles containing postcards & papers belonging to Peggy Clarke, joint British ladiesβ #chess champion & International Correspondence Lady Master. Perfect for #WomensHistoryMonth #IWD @richardjameschess.bsky.social #chesshistory
Looking forward to the article - don't forget to post a link to remind me! The latest quarterly for chess history might I treat you - lots of match results for the London ladies club matches.
Oh, come on mate! You are way too quick for me to post the link myself!! I hope all is well with you - off on a few days away next weekend onwards, so apologies in advance if I do not keep up. Cheers.
Make a change to have ice involved in the chess analogy. Watched a bit of it earlier, and, like in chess, you have a time control!!
Of course! Well, sort of. I am old and remembered the gameπ€£
Not as simple as it looks!
Blog in progress, after a delay for real life. A game which changed chess thinking forever. Steinitz was rather special.
No, I didn't solve it.βΉοΈ. Rather beautiful isn't it
One of my many Morphy 4 routes: I beat Ron Bruce, who beat Jacques Mieses, who beat Louis Paulsen, who beat Paul Morphy, all in tournament games.
A similar line is through Atkins who played casual games with Owen - who played Morphy at odds - iirc. I only count tournament games other than with Morphy's opponents, otherwise I would have Ritson - Atkins - Owen. There is a picture from the Anderssen - Morphy match with Mortimer there I think.
I ran a Leicester Poly team in the county league for a year and a half, and twice played Alf Lenton's son Philip. I've written about Alf, whom I later met twice on my Minor Pieces website.
See articles 58-64 for some of my articles about chess in Leicester.

βThe BCCIβ¦ have, like Trump, overreached. If they donβt learn to play nice with other members of the ICC from a position of strength, they will find out, like Trumpβs America is starting to, that no country by itself can ever be the only game in town.β

Happy gravy day George mate! Chicken in the crispy skit round and round thing, while I work out my new clicky cat door. The humans I own out it in to keep out the bad cats! Have a good one. Norm the Garden Guard Cat.
Ah, it seems very quiet in Ahmedabad at the moment. Those'passionate Indian 'cricket fans'. appreciating good cricket, whoever is playing it.π€£
A photo from Timman's Twitter featuring his cat Artemis on a chessboard and a number of antique chess sets in an apartment. https://x.com/GMJanTimman/status/1687498481638711296
Timman was also one of the people I missed most when leaving Chess twitter. He shared endgame studies he was working on and weekly quotes from other players on chess. Plus this gem: his cat Artemis with what appears to be an amazing collection of antique chess sets. I would love to see the rest

Black-and-white photograph of Vera Menchik, the pioneering first Women's World Chess Champion, seated at a chessboard in deep concentration during a game or study session. She rests her chin on her clasped hands, elbows on the table, gazing intently downward at the board with a calm, focused expression. Menchik has dark hair pulled back and wears a long-sleeved cardigan or sweater. The chessboard in the foreground displays a mid-game position with black and white pieces in play, including prominent kings, queens, bishops, knights, rooks, and pawns. Behind her, heavy dark curtains frame a bright window letting in natural light.
In 1927, Vera Menchik became the first Women's World Chess Champion at age 21 & is the longest-reigning women's champion in #chess history.
She defended the title 7 times, held it undisputed until her tragic death in 1944 at age 38 in a V-1 rocket bombing during #WWII. She was born #OTD in 1906.
Chess is, socially, a great game. Chess clubs are a social group, as well as a competitive one, imho.
