What is the 1A Ordinance? In a 2021 session with no public input, Charleston City Council implemented this draconian ‘First Amendment Ordinance,’ which made organizing safe protests nearly impossible. Approval to exercise our Constitutional right is now entirely at the discretion of City Council and Chief of Police. Attempts from churches to host public vigils, organizers trying to hold Free Palestine rallies, and people just wanting to express their frustration with the Trump administration have all been illegally prevented by the city or brutalized by Charleston police. This crackdown comes as part of a broader trend of anti-free speech and peaceful assembly from not only the city of Charleston, but the county, the state, and the nation. Now through the beginning of December, we are running a coat drive. You can donate any new or gently used coats, jackets, sweaters, sleeping bags, socks, and blankets! Any warm clothing will be accepted and everything collected will go directly to unhoused and low income residents.

On election night, socialist candidates around the country showed up and won big. In practice, the police have abused this power. They demand last-minute location changes, intimidate organizers, and enforce the ordinance unequally. Pledge of Allegiance: Loyalty, not Liberty In 1892, Francis Bellamy —a Christian socialist—wrote the version of the pledge we know today: “I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands…” He hoped it would unite the nation across class lines, but his vision was deeply flawed. Bellamy was anti-immigrant and believed loyalty to the flag could "correct" their values Then in 1954, during the Cold War, President Eisenhower added “under God” to the pledge. The goal? To tie religion, patriotism, and capitalism into one national identity. The pledge became less about unity and more about ideological conformity. It trained us to salute the system, not question it. That’s not liberty. That’s obedience.
