Oh exercising power, even Faithful, indescribably pleasurable. When you exercise Power, do the Work, your mind basically not human in the moment. It experiences a pure joy + pleasure just this side of overwhelming, beyond the reach of the mind even in deep meditation but for a vague haunting memory.

For "the voice" so to speak in this game, it's terrible. So terrible. Your demon (if a Hell Sorcerer), sponsor (if Blessed), spirits you attracted, all that. You have capital-p Power. You can make reality Do Things. Things want you to make it do it *for them*. Badly.

Which itself intentionally communicates a spectrum of how far you're willing to go. In everyday play, those scale pretty well with the power you can invoke (or must for some things). But for peak and retiring play, self-sacrifice can do miracles nothing else can reach.

Two types of fuel and a third possibility. Inheritances and Philosophies have preferences, but you can do you. One is you, your you-ness. The other is what you draw from others and sacrifices (which takes the it-ness or them-ness, however justified). The "free" third option is capital-V Violations.

The Dark is real.
You've been touched by it.
But most people do their best to ignore the supernatural.
People beset by demons must turn to occult detectives like you.
Only you can help them.
Because no one else will.

*I* think it's particularly cool and it speaks especially *to me* (and hence why I wrote it that way) representing that people are complex and paradoxical. You can be equally on the edge of truly reclaiming (or recreating) your humanity & soul and on the edge of being consumed forever by the Shadow.

And thank you so much for the kind words! <3 And for sure, it's grey decisions and consequences just all the way down. On humanity bit, right now I'm feeling proud of the parallel tracks for ascending and falling (and no roll to resist a hit, just a bad choice of accepting or likely risking worse).

And for the first SNAP! layer (equiv to Concept in Vespers), Tether. Both the fundamental ideal/worldview that grounds you and you connections to this world connected to it (without which you lose coherence, tearing yourself and the world around you apart).

5 groups of 3 Inheritances, which are 3 types of witches (literal hereditary), lodge mages, sorcerers (natural law violators), blessed (anointed by old gods and other things), faithful. Carries the usual 3rd layer powers.

SOMEONE ELSE ENTIRELY IN MY DMS: "I was looking at the SNAP SRD and wondering how I could best simulate Mage: Ascension as a game of dueling paradigms/ genres."
Sooooo.... Crimson Canticles is an actual draft playtest set. Which is the Workers and Faithful (who are Workers, much as they deny it).

Hey #VTM, I just got done reading Vermillion Vespers (link below) and you should check it out. It feels like the next step after V5, if you want to write a dark story of a monster trying to keep some brand of humanity. Less combat, more grey decisions and consequences.

Thank you! <3 That is part of the vibes I always imagined and always felt promised. I wanted words to be dangerous. And actual violence to feel weighty, costly, at least nearly Pyrrhic. But without just throwing numbers at people (though you definitely don't want a SWAT mob). I hoped I succeeded!

And it was too much fun. It's still too much fun. It was the ultimate game machine. And the ultimate learning machine. And the ultimate programming machine. (All for the time, relatives, all that.) It's mindblowing looking back at it. And irritating how much it was (oft still is) taken for granted.

Move retro computing communities. A few... yeah, you know That Guy guys. But overall, just great vibes. People who just wanna have some joy in the love. People trying to explore the limits. People discovering and rediscovering both old and new joys. Love it.

They also had an incredible space olympics game. The only Epyx knockoff really worth playing that I can remember (like good enough to be published by Epyx good!). Only 4 events, but so fun.

In an era before the Web, let alone widespread internet, it's amazing how many cracked copies of Commodore games in North America were German, Belgian, and (especially) Swiss cracking teams.
The demos were also amazing.
But just fascinating how copies made it over *widespread*.

I mean, when I can run a game like this, I do. For very particular concepts I might do the classic indie multi-track thing. But generally, I default to universal health and no particular combat system, just by the fiction + rolls resolution. Maybe privileging talking and acting before fighting.

Yes. Also a thing in my vampyr game.
You can humiliate that guy into fleeing court. Obvi, earned or amplified an enemy. But nobody is trying to put you down as a rabid threat. Someone might be even be impressed.
Works in a fight too. Everyone is effective.

Part of what I love about "universal health" or "unified stress" or whatever variation you wanna call it is how it hits the huge tropes and tactics of mixing roughing up and intimidation, calling a truce in a fight, or any of those other mixtures of physical action and social pressure. SO COOL!
