I do think Today is rather the replacement of their previous "random twitter drops". It's no surprise the Today app started right around the time Twitter got worse and worse for advertisers, they don't want to rely on a shitty social media because it's volatile and their userbase isn't there anymore
I think Nintendo DOES want to do the normal Directs still, they are a much bigger media push than Nintendo Today drops and are incredibly helpful for third party partners (everyone wants their trailer in a banger direct after all).
