Op-ed: Tariffs, immigration policies, SNAP cuts, and more are raising food prices and grocery bills. Americans deserve better.

With SNAP funding lapsed, millions face uncertainty. Food banks and partners are stepping up to meet the momentβtogether.

Millions of Americans are using Klarna and GoFundMe to buy groceries, and Trump is sending another $20 billion to bail out Argentina. Whoβs going to bail out working people? Whoβs going to bail out farmers or small business owners? So much for America First.
Rural areas with strong social networks are attracting younger residents, leading to a boom in local food startups and farm-to-table initiatives.

The question many of us wrestle with is how to really make a difference with those who are on fixed incomes and canβt afford to feed their families now. This could be part of the solution.
The quiet words of the wise are more to be heeded
than the shouting of a ruler among fools.
βWisdom is better than weapons of war,
but one bungler destroys much good.
βEcclesiastes 9
Fear is self-focused. Day to day, our fear is about us. What will happen if...?
But generosity is about the other. βHow can I help?β
Itβs more than a shift in perspective. Itβs a shift in purpose.

If you remove the yoke from among you,
the pointing of the finger, the speaking of evil,
if you offer your food to the hungry
and satisfy the needs of the afflicted,
then your light shall rise in the darkness
and your gloom be like the noonday.
βIsaiah 58
ββ¦people donβt grasp the magnitude of the task being accomplished by USAID. Much of its work requires a massive system across continents, countries, governments and supply chains that the church is not remotely able to match.β

"What do you want to be when you grow up?" asked the Mole.
"Kind," said the Boy.
The film "The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse" turned out to be the perfect thing to watch tonight as an antidote to the chaos, fear, and hatred swirling around.
"The current crisis we face is not simply about how much food the world produces, but is also about how it is distributed. While millions of people face famine, 1.3 billion tons of food are lost or wasted each year."
That the bishopβs words elicit hate is nothing new. This was and is the experience of the prophet. We are *all* under the mercy and justice of God. Myself included. And if you have a problem with what Iβm saying, donβt complain to me. Take it up w/ God. A prophet once said that also :-). (2/2)
Last year we doubled the number of families served by our food pantry. This month we will more than double last January despite bad weather. Our projections have been calling for 50% growth this year but tragically it may be closer to 100%. Is your pantry ready? #foodinsecurity
Praying for the poor and vulnerable throughout the United States as temps are set to drastically plunge.
Food is a basic human right, not a privilege.
Acts of service are acts of worship. Our hands serve others and Worship God in the same moment. #BeUMC #WorshipThroughService

βJoin or Dieβ shows the connection between the decline of church membership and the rise of loneliness.

I was behind the baked goods table at our food pantry this morning when I offered a patron a cake. "No," she replied. "I make them." She works full time in the bakery department at a local grocery store, but tragically still has to come to the food pantry to have enough food for her family to eat.
A prayer that we might become the people God has gifted us to be

The name of an email newsletter "Homesteading" conjures up traditional family values. Monday's edition included dozens of ways to "make Christmas Eve unforgettable" for families including "candlelit reflections." Tragically missing is any mention of why Christmas is celebrated in the first place.
"Will we imagine a future where the rich are sent away empty and the poor are filled with good things? Or will we blithely continue down a path determined by those who exploit people and resources, amassing wealth without regard for who they harm in the process?"
Hunger doesn't take a vacation, yet many food pantries are closed until after New Year's. If we really believe we are feed the hungry, it can't just be when there's not a holiday.
Make people feel loved today. Rainbow multicoloured text on a black background picture by anxiety positive
When we help others feel loved, weβre creating space for them to rest, to breathe, and to believe they belong - and that they donβt stand alone. π§‘

As long as the wealthy were living comfortably at the expense of the poor, as long as some members of society were second class citizens at best and property at worst, as long as the powerful preached piety but practiced something else altogether, nothing short of a revolution would do. (2/2)
"I remember being so hungry after my dad lost his job," the caller said. "Then mom heard about your pantry and we had food to eat until my dad got a new job. You don't know me, but your pantry kept me alive. Thank you!" We never know the impact we make when we unconditionally share God's love.
Dusting off this account from the days when we all had to be invited to have one - and then I never used it. What I'll be writing about here is the importance of addressing food insecurity with dignity -- solutions are more than a bag of food; resilience hubs; and how to combat social isolation.
