It's not that QOTD nor WH are too different from the source material. It's that the changes don't add any layers of complexity or meaning, and in the mad-libs paper-shredder versions of these stories complexity and meaning is actively*removed*.

I'm re-reading The Queen of The Damned and you know how Wuthering Heights is how Emerald Fennell interpreted the book through a 14 year old brain? Yeah. I think the same thing happened with that film adaptation.
