I made an animated map of ship movements in the Straights of Hormuz using data from marinetraffic.com.
Ship track frames rendered using #ggplot, base map created using #gdal, video editing using #ffmpeg, video player written in #svelte.

When D3 was released in February 2011, it transformed how we build data visualizations for the web and ushered in a new age of unbridled creativity in information design, data journalism, and beyond. Today, it remains the backbone of modern, interactive data viz.
Happy 15th birthday, D3 🎂

Development environment of new Power BI visual
This new visual start to work out really nice: A Likert scale bar chart with neutral values in the center and automatic calculations of the overall score (in this example: net score).
Still a few features missing, but getting there.

Olympic Winter Games, 1932–2022
Higher, faster — and more medals.
At first glance, the steamgraph reflects the steady expansion of the Games themselves: more disciplines, more events, more podiums. Look closer, though, and it also compresses decades of political history into a single shape.
The green band traces the forty years of a divided Germany. The red band tells a more fractured story: across the decades, Russian athletes appear under four different names, each change driven by politics rather than sport.
In absolute terms, medals attributed to countries outside the top 15 increase over time, whether their share truly grows is less clear..
The Winter Olympics are almost over. A good moment to look back at the stream of medals over time.
The Olympics try to stay apolitical, but this steamgraph still reflects European history, much like cold winters leave marks in a tree’s rings.

Screenshot of site some really cool data visualisations, arranged in a grid.
When running #DataViz workshops, one question that often gets asked is "what's your favourite ever chart?" 📊
So I've started compiling some of the awesome visualisations made by other people that I often share!
A very much a work-in-progress, non-exhaustive list: nrennie.rbind.io/fave-data-viz/

📣 NEW! I’ve just released the BIGGEST and perhaps most creative project I’ve ever worked on!
“Searching for Birds” searchingforbirds.visualcinnamon.com 🐤
A project, an article, an exploration that dives into the data that connects humans with birds, by looking at how we search for birds.

Hey — it’s really nice to see that even leading industry experts can take something away from my work.
It’s actually quite amazing how many subtleties emerge once you dive deeper into the D3 code.

A visualisation of nine Japanese volcanoes
Nine volcanoes of Japan. Mt. Fuji is instantly recognisable. The others too, I hope.
This took a while to get right. Looks like fancy chocolates, no? Or little LED buttons.

Suburbia is Subsidized: Here's the Math [ST07]
YouTube video by Not Just Bikes
Nice video showcasing how data visualization can help to bring a point across the audience.

Using a 3D map showing revenues and expenses of a city (probably made with deck.gl), the author is pretty convincing in telling us that walkable cities are a good thing.

These two visuals are now also available on the Power BI Marketplace and mostly free to use, even without a license.
Simple visuals, no coding required like when using the Deneb visual.

Thanks for the shootout, @chezvoila.com
Over the next weeks, I will be working on proper documentation, how they can be used in Power BI.
Also noteworthy, both visuals are based on SveltePlot. I really like working with this library!

Yes, fit text in a box with fixed width/height. Multi-line not so often, mostly because it is right now close to impossible.
The setting requires a min/max type size, as you often want to fix, but only to a certain size and then start truncating.
Same for icons, but that is already possible, no?

Also worth mentioning:
The line chart is using SveltePlot from @driven-by-data.net under the hood. Such an amazing library. Gregor, hope you keep working on that!

They don’t try to reinvent the wheel, but they do offer a few things I’ve found useful:
→ Small multiples support
→ Thoughtful label placement, with options for data and series labels
→ Streamlined, slightly opinionated designs, making it easier to create good-looking visuals quickly
