For other viewers of Black Doves, I can tell you from personal experience that the DWP Christmas parties do not look like this.

Terraform Rules of Thumb

I finished off a post I've had in my back pocket over the weekend talking about some of the rules of thumb I apply when working with infrastructure as code.

I’d love to say this doesn’t annoy me, but it really does….

β€œLogin” and β€œlog in” is another example.

Very relatable. I end up stressing myself out over my side projects until I remember to be kind to myself and that I’m only doing it for the joy of coding!

I’m at the ~3mo mark of learning and using Neovim and I love it, but I have had a few cases where it hasn’t worked well and I’ve fallen back to VSCode (mainly for C#). So I’ve been debating whether I should just stick to the tool I already know.

Great to hear your perseverance has paid off!

This is my favourite album I’ve listened to this year. Feels like properly timeless music

The longer Bluesky goes without competition, the sooner this decentralized social media experiment fails.

Seriously, don’t submit AI generated content for a job application. Use it as a tool to give you feedback or prepare for an interview, sure, but at this stage I’d rather have something poorly written than something with the niff of AI about it - at least you know what you’re dealing with.

AWS Lambda turns 10: A rare look at the doc that started it On AWS Lambda's 10th anniversary, I'm publishing the internal PR/FAQ that helped launch this groundbreaking service. This document provides insight into the customer problems we observed in the early ...

Just enjoyed reading the original PR/FAQ that kickstarted lambda and the litany of alternatives that followed.

Just enjoyed reading www.principalengineer.com/p/old-school....

I've been thinking a similar thing lately, and have liked using Astro's Islands concept to write a 'good old server-rendered' app with bits of React for pockets of interactivity.

Not thrilled about JS on the server but I'm having fun.

Good timing.

I propose a slight change to the definition: to put everything on hold except Bsky'ing until you've had sufficient amounts of coffee.

No I agree. Could we have used FaaS? Probably, and there probably would have been benefits. One of the goals was to increase supportability. The team supporting the system day to day were generally not developers, so the abstraction/misdirection with FaaS was unhelpful.

Workflow overview Overview of Dapr Workflow

I really wish Dapr’s workflow engine had existed then. It would have saved us from loads of the workflow machinery.

We did exactly that for an enterprise customer’s integration services last year - stateless containers in AKS (Azure EKS equiv.) with KEDA’s queue length autoscaling.

It helped that the customer had an ops team ready to learn and take on management, but they’ve not had any major headaches.

A reminder to those working with Azure Blob: explicitly set a start time when generating SAS tokens for immediate use. This stops you from falling foul the default start time being 1s in the future. Ask me how I know.

Receiving criticism on something you create isn’t the easiest thing in the world, despite expecting, welcoming, or encouraging it. You can teach yourself to process criticism in a positive way but I’m not sure it can ever be a purely positive experience.

AI (currently) can’t persevere with a problem or challenge. Or have a solution suddenly appear to them at 3am or in the shower.
