I remain fascinated by people who are 100% all-in on using LLMs at their jobs (and telling everyone that they're doing it) and who appear to have never paused to consider "what value am I personally adding in here, at this point, and why do I think my employers won't eventually figure this out"

It doesn't "write". It doesn't "do research". It doesn't "think", "reason", or "know".
It processes and outputs.
In five years, this won't be any different.

On the train home, and am next to a group of five 20ish loud multicultural lads drinking beers on the way to the football. They're talking about tarot, Basquiat, starting drama classes, your true creative self, respectful Tinder dates, and reading each other their astrology signs. Nature is healing.

The HPC Carpentry logo. Woodworking tools are arranged to spell out the letters HPC, framed inside a circular saw blade design. The logo is centered inside a hexagon with orange border.

A cult of personality where AI is the leader. Cultists so desperate to be "relevant" that they cease to understand that some people would rather be ethically right and "irrelevant".

My doomer-worry about AI is not that the LLMs become omnipotent and take over the world but that the wealthy and powerful use it as a means to consolidate power and marginalize or lay off skilled workers and also everything about our technological and political and social life gets worse

I think it's best for everyone to understand that the unified class project of billionaires right now is to do to white collar workers what globalization and neoliberalism did to blue collar workers.

As someone who has sought and received funding for structured metadata in science for a lot of my career, all I can say is good luck getting funders to fund it long term, and scientists to actually do the work in the face of publication pressure. The system needs to change wholesale.

A bird's-eye view of a former Auschwitz II-Birkenau camp showing a wide dirt pathway flanked by parallel rows of barbed-wire fences. Groups of visitors walk along the path, surrounded by the remnants of brick structures and barracks, now reduced to foundations. Green grass contrasts with the somber history of the site, as the path leads toward a guard tower in the distance.
Auschwitz was at the end of a process. We must remember that it did not start from gas chambers.
This hatred gradually developed: from ideas, words, stereotypes & prejudice through legal exclusion, dehumanization & escalating violence... to systematic and industrial murder.
Auschwitz took time.
