High temperatures today and weβve already had a long period of drought. Drinking water always seemed completely self-evident in NL. But itβs not.
Although the Dutch focus has traditionally been on how to keep water out, we need to focus more on storing water.

In times when funding becomes increasingly challenging and restrictive, this investment from Energi Simulation is a real difference maker for many PhDs and postdocs working in the field of #geoscience for the ##energytransition at our department at TU Delft
www.tudelft.nl/en/2025/citg...
At this year's #EAGEAnnual2025 my colleague Anne gave a truly passionate and compassionate pitch why #geoscience #education needs to become more inclusive and diverse if we are serious about inspiring new talents to enter this field and work on the #energytransition @rockdeftud.bsky.social βοΈπ‘π
Photo by Richard Lasher. Horizontal and vintage photo of a road in a mountain forest. Red car with a motorbike on the road. In the distance a huge ash cloud from the eruption of Mt St. Helens on May 18th, 1980.
On May 18, 1980, Richard Lasher got up early to get some photos at Spirit Lake. Instead, he was forced to stop because of the massive, explosive Mount St. Helens eruption and captured this iconic photo with his own red Ford Pinto on the road. π§ͺβοΈ #OTD

Thank you Tanja for this letter. I have already written to my MP recently but will follow your example and write another letter.
PhD Jesse came by in the afternoon and made my day with these freshly cored heterogeneous #Rotliegend #sandstone samples for #CrossScale w/ @geoenergyprof.bsky.social Aren't they pretty? Next: cutting them (and deciding where...), CT scan, porosimetry and then... Break them! ππ #breakingrocks #rocks
A conceptual picture showing how CO2 injected into a saline aquifer is being trapped across different scales - from pore- to reservoir-scale - due to capillary forces and barriers in capillary pressure, arising from geological heterogeneities at these scales.
Together with colleagues from @imperialcollegeldn.bsky.social we have tried to bring some clarity into the concept of capillary pinning during #CCS, considering the scales and heterogeneity in #geology www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
Harvard University @harvard.edu weigert op de eisen van president Trump in te gaan en zet 2,2 miljard dollar aan overheidsgeld op het spel. De universiteit is niet van plan haar βonafhankelijkheid op te gevenβ.
Proud of our postdoc Milady Naderloo rocking his #DeepNL plenary presentation, arguing the lessons learnt from #InducedSeismicity should not go to waste in #energytransition related scenarios
Our open-ed statement in @tudelta.bsky.social, expressing solidarity with our colleagues and their students at the Vrije Universiteit of Amsterdam: delta.tudelft.nl/en/article/c... #geoscience #academia #science
#GirlsDay today! On behalf of our Faculty @tudelftceg.bsky.social. We talked about earthquakes, geology & geothermal energy. We used straws to drill geologically layered clay, jumped and registered the "seismic wave" with @phyphox.org and of course we broke a rock! #breakingrocks #rocks π€π
The Vrije Universiteit of Amsterdam (VU) announced the decision to close its earth sciences department & cut 42 jobs as part of a wider measure to save β¬60M. The BSc degree in earth sciences will be discontinued. We want to express our solidarity with our colleagues & the students at the VU, as well as their families, who face unprecedented uncertainties about their future. Our thoughts are with them. These cuts are not only devastating for the affected staff & students. They will have major consequences for geoscience research & teaching in the Netherlands & beyond. Geoscience in the Netherlands is highly respected around the world by industry & academia alike. This respect is firmly grounded in the collaborative, complementary & internationalised approach to research & teaching across the Netherlands. Losing a crucial part of the Dutch geoscience knowledge base at the VU will weaken the international standing of the Netherlands in the broader field of earth & geosciences, not only putting innovation at risk in a time where we can ill-afford this, but also reducing the number of urgently needed graduates. Geosciences underpin many of the solutions that we need to tackle some of the most severe challenges humanity faces: combating climate change, access to clean water, energy security & energy transition, sustainable sourcing of critical raw materials, understanding the impact of environmental change, or mitigating the risks of natural hazards. While we can debate how we can better communicate the importance of geosciences to increase student numbers, closing the earth science department at the VU sends the wrong message: that geosciences are expendable, at a time when they are needed more than ever. Only through cooperation & solidarity, not only in the field of geosciences & not only in the Netherlands, universities will be able to push back against government cuts & anti-science politics that threaten to inflict potentially devastating damages to our society.
A statement of solidarity with our colleagues and their students from the Department of Earth Sciences at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam #geoscience #academia #science #earthscience #climatechange #energytransition βοΈπ§ͺπ§¬π‘π

A beautiful and passionate inaugural lecture by our colleague Hadi Hajibeygi β¬οΈ
Amidst all terrible news, I am sad that here it is not better. Today the VU Amsterdam announced they'll cut Earth Sciences, and fire 39 staff. 130 students are left to figure out how to finish, and an unknown number of PhDs lose their supervisors. My heart goes out to my colleagues π³π₯

This is a great illustration of what the new energy order looks like:
β‘οΈ large to small
β‘οΈ centralised to decentralised
β‘οΈ large grids to microgrids
β‘οΈ one-directional to bi-directional
β‘οΈ passive consumers to active prosumers
Of course simplified & highly stylised but it shows the direction of travel.

As one of the signatories of the brilliant open letter by @scurry.bsky.social I am dismayed by this decision, but sadly also not entirely surprised. If we don't stand up for our values and science in this day and age, especially if we're privileged to do so, when then?
Any lab can only be so good as their technicians... Last week our rock saw broke down. Today our invaluable technician Marc is fixing it so probably tomorrow it is already working again. Our MScs, PhDs and postdocs are not much delayed. Yay for Marc! (And the rest of our awesome tech team!)
