✊ The Pataxó Leaders Council has denounced Veracel disrespect towards their land rights.

🔥This is happening in a context of a rise in violence, criminalisation and overall persecution of the Pataxó once again, a sharp escalation of systemic abuses against their communities.

These plantations overlap with customary Indigenous territories, such as those of the Pataxó indigenous people. It include areas obtained through illegal appropriation.

🚜 Veracel is a wide-known pulp and paper company in Brazil, owned by Stora Enso and pulp and paper giant Suzano. Veracel owns vast areas of eucalyptus plantations, including in the Bahia region of Brazil.

In the past, the Environmental Paper Network has shed light to Suzano’s greenwashing claims, arguing that private and public banks should not finance Suzano due to its social and environmental impacts.

These plantations overlap with customary Indigenous territories which, according to a Public Prosecutor’s investigation, include areas obtained through illegal appropriation.

🌳 This escalating conflict is happening in a region dominated by vast eucalyptus plantations operated by Veracel - a company jointly owned by pulp and paper giant Suzano and Scandinavian corporation Stora Enso.

This Tuesday, the Council of Pataxó Chiefs from the Barra Velha and Comexatibá territories in Bahia, Brazil, issued a statement condemning a sharp escalation of violence, persecution, and systemic abuses against the Pataxó people.

This decision was shared a few weeks after the Spanish government’s release its national electrification plan, which excluded the needed connection for the pulp mill to be able to operate once built. This motivated the Galician government to declare the death of Altri's project.

After 100,000 people protested in Santiago de Compostela, after civil society, local communities and businesses stepped up and raised their voices against this mega project, cracks started to show. And last Friday, people were able to celebrate! ✊

An Indonesian wood chip producer supplying Asia Symbol, RGE’s mega-sized pulp mill in China, has been sourcing large volumes of wood that cleared +5,500 hectares of natural forest between 2020-2024 in East Kalimantan Province, on the island of Borneo.

More specifically, RGE has admitted its pulpwood demand is actively clearing rainforests via the controversial woodchip mill, PT. Balikpapan Chip Lestari (PT.BCL).
