The impact of the climate left is perhaps very small. Global finance, energy majors, and mainstreams politics more than sufficient to continue to lock in large-scale emissions. Perhaps the error of the left was to have ever thought anyone would actually 'listen to the science'?

To be clear here: the climate science said: if you want to limit warming to well below 2Β°C then fossil fuels must be phased out (because carbon budget so small). Politicians interpreted that as 'net zero' and (amongst other things) continued to grant leases for new oil & gas. And here we are.

Derailment Risk: A Climate Blind Spot with Laurie Laybourn - Kairos Tuesday March 10th, 6.30 for 7pm As the world heads deeper into the new climate reality, how will we maintain our ability to act? It's often assumed that our agency will only grow as climate impacts e...

In London on Tuesday night this week?

Join me at Kairos on Tottenham Court Road to talk about how we can maintain our agency to act on climate change even as its impacts escalate

Keir Starmer and David Lammy are taking an extraordinarily dangerous gamble with our individual liberty This week, MPs will vote on the second reading of the Courts and Tribunals Bill. Don’t let the anodyne name fool you – this is one of the most revolutionary pieces of legislation in our…

Labour's core voters, on which its re-election entirely depends, are crystal clear about this: they absolutely hate its illiberal, intolerant, draconian, rightwards turn. Hence the total collapse in support. So how does the government respond? #SuicideMissionπŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

It's worth pointing out the Hansen's conclusions are largely within the envelope of IPCC reported climate sensitivity.

Yes, one of the comparatively rare statements that very clearly communicate this issue.

We're on track to sail past 2C...TPs are very much in the crosshairs. Governments already know this; their own scientists have laid it out for them very clearly. Their short term ism and vested interests propaganda will ensure an unstable world for coming generations. We all must demand change NOW!

This is where risks assessments are probably going to head towards. The danger is that the outcomes of such assessments make things worse. Much work to be done there.

Yep. Which is why I think effective climate policy is going to be about people, not planet. Well at least not leading about planet.

There is a limit on how far we can let climate run away now, if we are to give the next generation an opportunity. See Runaway – mailchi.mp/caa/runaway-...

Pace of global warming has nearly doubled since 2015, reveals study - Carbon Brief An acceleration in human-caused global warming could see the Paris Agreement’s 1.5C limit breached before...

I'm not suggesting this is an open secret within the climate science community, but it's remarkable how little impact this sort of research is generating. Because if the rate of warming really has *doubled* then you can kiss goodbye to 2Β°C. www.carbonbrief.org/pace-of-glob...

"If you rule out the fast phase out of #fossilfuels, then you have to either remove carbon from the atmosphere, or reflect sunlight. Who decided that #geoengineering was more feasible than rapid fossil fuel phase out?" @jamesgdyke.info

Energy majors & petrostates are not going to willingly implode their businesses & economies. Build multilateral coalitions to reduce demand. Accelerate renewables & link this to material improvements in people's lives. Work to make sustainability transitions resilient - there is trouble ahead.

Techno-belief is a millenial gamble on civilization. Our time will be remembered of many gruesome things, but messing up the climate is damning for our posterity.

Realism:
"πŸ‘‰Net zero by 2050: increasingly meaningless
πŸ‘‰Overshoot won’t be temporary or even reversible. Large-scale CO2 removal doesn’t exist
πŸ‘‰Solar geoengineering: a bad idea
πŸ‘‰We didn’t confront the deep dysfunctions in our political systems"
Yet still we must act: Fast fossil fuel phase out!

As the β€˜growth agenda’ is increasingly dominating UK research funding, we scientists also need to push back against this drive to line the pockets of the super rich

05.03.2026 07:07 πŸ‘ 35 πŸ” 11 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

We didn’t confront the deep dysfunctions in our political systems, we failed to rein in our destruction. There are consequences to this failure. If one of these is we realise we must turn our attentions and efforts to radical mitigation, then we would have learnt something important. END

Yes we can avoid further dangerous climate change, we can stop the destruction of nature, we can begin the transformation of our societies so that they live in balance with the Earth system. But no we didn’t act on the science when we should have 10/11

It's also worth pointing out that fossil fuel dependency is the ultimate cause for why the United States is lighting up the Middle East. Again. 9/11
