Positioning matters way more than most people think.
A classic example:
Avis vs. Hertz.
Avis openly positioned themselves as
"We're only No. 2. We try harder."
It instantly makes them likeable & perceived as more motivated - instead of smaller, probably worse.

You bring up a good point: because the right positioning creates abundance in the market. There's no scarcity feeling anymore of "oh no, it has already been done, now I need to compete on price". You can create your own niche instead.
