We’re introducing a new layer of verification on Bluesky — a user-friendly, easily recognizable blue check.

In addition to account verification issued by Bluesky, we're also introducing Trusted Verifiers. Select independent organizations can verify accounts directly.

Also included in this release: scrolling the feed should feel snappier on Android. Thanks to GitHub user zetavg for contributing the fix! 🙏

We also included a bug fix: you can now remove saved feeds that are failing to load.

Just shipped: Bluesky Direct Messages! - Bluesky You can now send direct messages (DMs) to people on Bluesky! Say hi to a friend, colleague, or a crush.

By default, only people you follow can message you. You can change this setting to everyone or no one, or keep it to people you follow.

Update to the latest version of the app (1.83) or refresh on desktop to start chatting!

Who can read DMs? A diagram shows Alice sending a DM to Bob through Bluesky. Alice and Bob can read the DM. Bluesky can read the DM, but access is carefully controlled, including for moderators. Eve (an outsider) cant read the DMs

DMs on Bluesky will not be "end-to-end encrypted" until we are able to do some more protocol work.

We have very careful access controls within our systems.

If you're extremely privacy conscious, I'd recommend using Bluesky DMs to share your Signal accounts!

3️⃣ App passwords can now be created with "Access to DMs" privileges, if needed. This is useful for using a third-party client with DMs, like @skeetdeck.bsky.social !

2️⃣ Posts which are hidden in a thread due to mutes or labels are now grouped under one "Show hidden posts" card. Additionally, labels placed on posts and accounts now consistently show who applied the label.

We've got a bundle of usability improvements and DM bugfixes in this one, starting with:

1️⃣ The "alt text" indicator on images has been moved to the right and reduced in size to avoid covering text in images.

This first version of DMs has limited features (no images or encryption yet), but we'll be adding more safety enhancements in future updates.

Enjoy connecting with others via Bluesky DMs!

Infractions may result in temporary or permanent loss of DM privileges or even full account takedowns.

Please use DMs responsibly!

In rare cases, we may need to open your DMs to investigate broader patterns of abuse, such as spam or coordinated harassment.

Rest assured this would only be done when absolutely necessary to keep Bluesky safe, and access is extremely limited and tracked.

You can report DMs directly to mods, who will review reported messages for Community Guidelines violations.

Mods can see the reported message and surrounding messages for context to assess your report.

Blocked someone? They won't be able to DM you. Additionally, you can easily block users right from within the DM feature.

By default, only people you follow can start conversations with you.

To change this, check the settings in the DM interface. You can allow DMs from no one, only people you follow, or all Bluesky users. It’s up to you!

New paper from me and @samlai.bsky.social out today in the Journal of Online Trust and Safety, looking at the moderation capabilities of federated and decentralized social media, and what needs to happen to make these platforms resilient to online harms.

Even more interesting, though, given the current interest in novel risks posed by AI, is that a last-generation OpenAI model performed almost as well as the foreign agents. Here are study authors Josh A. Goldstein, Jason Chao, Shelby Grossman, Alex Stamos, and Michael Tomz: GPT-3-generated propaganda was also highly persuasive, and 43.5% of respondents who read a GPT-3-generated article agreed or strongly agreed with the thesis statement, compared to 24.4% in the control (a 19.1 percentage point increase). This suggests that propagandists could use GPT-3 to generate persuasive articles with minimal human effort, by using existing articles on unrelated topics to guide GPT-3 about the style and length of new articles.

A new study out of Georgetown and Stanford found that propaganda generated by GPT-3 (not 4!) was persuasive to almost half of the people who read it. I spoke to one of the authors and wrote about the implications www.platformer.news/ai-generated...
