BREAKING: Senate Republicans just blocked my bill to fund TSA and FEMA... AGAIN.

This isn't complicated: if Republicans won't agree to rein in ICE & CBP, they should AT MINIMUM work with us to fund TSA.

But they won't.

Also, any one of them would have spotted her huge error re declaring war immediately.

Trump said this week that Iran was 2 weeks away from having a nuclear bomb. This is what he said in July.

How Congress can restore the independence of US science Members must go beyond reinstating US government research spending and re-establish decentralized governance at the National Institutes of Health and other agencies.

The most impt change at #NIH and to US science this year is bigger than grant cancellationsβ€” it’s how the agency is governed.

For 75 years NIH has been largely independent of presidential control. That’s changed this year. New piece from me and @nataliebaviles.bsky.social in @nature.com

I always show my students the clip of Butterfield testifying about the tapes when we study US v Nixon. I think it's important for them to see the significance of the congressional investigations to the Watergate saga. It's also so striking to see Butterfield simply ... telling the truth when asked.

β€œMuslims don’t belong in American society,” says GOP Rep. Andy Ogles.

Made me think of my rabbi, after post-9/11 bigotry, saying that Jews, Catholics, Mormons, and anyone else called unamerican for their religion has a moral obligation to push back.

This country was founded on religious liberty.

Department of high irony:
Trump on Supreme Court β€”

β€œI think the Supreme Court ought to be ashamed of itself…I got to live with these people. And they’ll only vote bad, and I couldn’t care less at this point. They have hurt this country so badly because they haven’t had the guts to do what’s right.”

Please read this discussion of how ordinary Germans became Nazis.

Generally speaking, I don’t like this comparison (US now and Nazis). It’s lazy button-pushing that simplifies the present.

But the dynamics here…

Read.

If there’s a pet hall of fame, these two late, great ones belong in it for sure. (The photo’s from several years ago - I dug it up because something reminded me of these wonderful weirdos).

Yes, one silver lining as I was reading this -- I do recall looking at that portrait in Room 127 whenever I had a class in there in the mid 90s. It was the only portrait of a woman in the room at the time, and I can't recall another in the building back then.

This sucks. I’ve been reading @mattzollerseitz.bsky.social for 20 years, since he championed Malick’s The New World. He’s one of the great enthusiasts in film criticism, who will go to the wall for what moves him regardless of what others think. I don’t always agree but I always enjoy reading him.
