Texas fossil fuel boycott law ruled unconstitutional A judge ruled Senate Bill 13, passed in 2021, violated the First and Fourteenth Amendments. The law prevented state investments in firms it deemed as boycotting oil and gas companies.

A federal district judge on Wednesday declared Senate Bill 13 — a 2021 law restricting state investments in companies boycotting the fossil fuel industry — unconstitutional, calling it “facially overbroad” and citing First and Fourteenth Amendment concerns.

“Oil resources and profiteering have arguably been the single largest driver of conflict in the 20th and now 21st centuries. Without the profit motive many of these wars would never have been started.

Solar and wind are now cheaper than oil, even unsubsidized, and they don’t provoke violent conflict; they don’t cause floods, fires, and disease; and they don’t need to be bailed out by us taxpayers.

Oil and gas conflicts have been short term profit drivers for most of the past century but for ordinary people, from the citizens of Kyiv and Caracas to nonprofit workers with pensions managed by TIAA, there is no question that it would be best to get out of oil and gas entirely.
