βI Was Having a Good Timeβ: How Did a Small Town in South Texas Get Hit With Two Oil Spills?
A playing field tilted towards regional officials, Texas Republicans, and foreign energy companies turned sleepy Ingleside on the Bay, Texas, into the Crude Oil Export Terminal of the United States, a...
In a related note, I spent three years looking into the looming disaster that is the Coastal Bend for @thexylom.com.
Did you know that San Patricio County, partially folded into Pulido's #TX15 district, has seen a 17-fold increase in toxic chemical risk, but has zero state-installed air monitors?

I'm sure it's a perfectly nice public park and definitely doesn't have the kind of vibes that repeatedly inspire dystopian sci fi and horror.

Reading The King in Yellow, which sets multiple stories on Washington Square, and having recently read To Paradise, also set there, and dipping into A Haunted History of Invisible Women to learn that the square holds over 20,000 corpses and, uh. That's enough cursed frequency bias for me, thank you.

National Water Prediction Service - NOAA
Tonight, I was looking at water.noaa.gov to see where the US is flooding. My 11-year old pointed to the ongoing major flooding in North Dakota, and I said "Oh, that's Devils Lake. It's always flooding there." They asked "Why?" and a rabbit hole yawned before me.

I mean, the thing that leaps out here is that you were at home before 4:30. most parents now don't finish work until after 5. the window for cooking and eating dinner is so much smaller when you don't get home until 6 and you still have to run the bath by 6:30 to have any hope at a good bedtime.

flashbacks to a woman insisting a mum could save time by getting her kids to make her own lunches in the morning because she'd made her own pb&js since she was 3, and it's just, honey, your mum spent up to 5 years spending significantly more time on your lunches than if she'd done it herself.

Happy International Women's Day!
Remember, when in doubt, do as Stagecoach Mary Fields did, and either headbutt, shoot it, set it on fire, or let your horses trample it.

Do car-free zones hurt disabled people? We asked experts.
City planners and advocates are seeing "accessibility used as a political football."
ββ¦disabled people are actually less likely to drive than nondisabled people and more likely to get around by walking and rolling and taking transit. Car-heavy cities are also disproportionately dangerous for disabled folksβ¦ββ @nondriver.bsky.social
