Light gray background. The All Stripes crest is at the top. Below is black text reading, “ATL & Proud. Pride month history series.” A progress Pride flag forms a bar across the center. On top of this are two photos. The left is of Outwrite Books when it was open with a tag below reading “Then.” To the right is a photo of Casa Almendra, a restaurant in the same space today with a tag below reading, “Now.” Black text at the bottom reads, “Outwrite Books & Coffeehouse. 991 Piedmont Ave NE.”
Additional context:
This Atlanta institution stood at the intersection of Piedmont Avenue and 10th Street for 18 years, serving as the introduction to gay Atlanta for many transplants to the city.
First opened in 1993 by Philip Rafshoon, it quickly grew requiring a move to this location in 1996. By the early 2000's, this corner of Midtown had so solidified its reputation for LGBTQ+ business that the location was referred to as, "the corner of Gay and Lesbian." Over the years, Outwrite hosted book signings, community meetings, protests, networking events, and more. Open 7 days a week, it was a great place to grab a coffee or tea, people watch, read, or meet friends. After facing increasing rent and intense competition from online booksellers and big box stores, Outwrite was forced to close in 2011. The location was quickly converted to restaurant space and has operated as such since then.
This pride month, we’re highlighting the places, people, and events that have made Atlanta the LGBTQ+ heart of the south.
Today we feature Outwrite Books and Coffeehouse, an Atlanta institution that made a lasting impact on a generation of Atlantans. Read more about it in the Alt text.
