Math is hard
Cover of “Climbers” hardcover featuring an illustration of climbing boots.
Just re-read M. John Harrison’s “Climbers” (Gollancz), 1989. Ostensibly a novel about Peak District rock climbing, this is really a vessel for MJH’s signature observations: snippets of bizarre conversation, granular descriptions of nature, dreams and memories that illuminate inner life. #BookSky

Yes, I’ve got all three. Can never remember which one I like best.
Abercrombie Quartet cover.
Now playing: John Abercrombie “Abercrombie Quartet” (ECM/Warner Bros.), 1979. Picked this up at my neighborhood store, Art Sound Language. Prefer Abercrombie without a keyboardist (too much competition for chordal space). But this is a good one if you see it. #jazzsky
The cover of “In on the Kill Taker” by Joe Gross
Had to give @joegross.bsky.social’s Albini chapter a re-read. #BookSky
Yes. Always.
Need this. Now.
Cover of Mark Charig’s “Pipedream.” Also features Keith Tippett and Ann Winter.
Vinyl reckoning: Just got this in the mail thanks to eagle-eyed @sidsmith.bsky.social. Ogun 1977. Trumpeter Mark Charig playing in a church with Keith Tippett on organ and Ann Winter vocalizing. Been looking for this for years. #JazzSky

If you like "the Singularity," I suspect you will dig this. Haven't read them, but the short stories are supposed to be his best stuff.
Front cover of “The Stronghold.” Art depicts mountains.
Just finished: Dino Buzzati’s “The Stronghold” (NYRB paperback). A.k.a. 1940’s “Tartar Steppe.” Published the same year Mussolini entered WWII. Elegiac Italian novel about imminence and the cyclic nature of time. #BookSky
Sonny Rollins plays the solo in the Stones song.
Been thinking about this a lot lately.
For friends in the Richmond, VA area...

All-white front cover of Harold Budd’s “Perhaps” double LP.
Vinyl reckoning: Harold Budd “Perhaps” (Root Strata), 2007. Peaceful solo piano for chaotic times.

The goddamned six o'clock news makes sure I keep thinking of World War III

First pass through Bill Frisell’s new string-heavy sextet record, “In My Dreams” (Blue Note). Spoiler alert: it’s beautiful. #JazzSky
Say "welcome" to your new overlord.
Front cover of “Expansions”
Back cover. Lineup features: Tyner on piano, Gary Bartz on alto and flute, Woody Shaw on trumpet, Wayne Shorter on tenor and clarinet, Ron Carter on cello, Herbie Lewis on bass, and Freddie Waits on drums.
Vinyl reckoning: McCoy Tyner “Expansions” (Blue Note/Toshiba). 1985 reissue of this 1969 set—featuring, among others, Gary Bartz, who was still with Tyner when I saw him in 2016. Tyner’s got a real circa-‘69 edge here that is, albeit not as mind-bending as the cover, plenty radical. #JazzSky
Perfect sound forever!

Thanks, I've been looking for a copy in the wild for decades.
Agreed, that was an exciting box set.
