Updated data from NIH Reporter on awards to Yale during the month of February. It's an improvement from the prior information, but still at ~40% last year on a per $ basis. Still only non-competitive renewals and no GM grants. Last year 11/61 were new. BUT - it is reassuring info for active grants.

Science finds explanation for disease that leaves children βfrozenβ
A team from the Center for Genomic Regulation in Barcelona details the molecular mechanism of a rare illness that causes transient paralysis and dangerous arrhythmias
When the CRG's Vivek Malhotra first identified a handful of protein-coding genes called TANGO in 2006, he had no idea that one of them, TANGO2, would eventually be linked to a life-threatening disorder in children. His team has continued to study the protein since.

This is awful. The language is so dystopian. I really want to wake up from this nightmare.
Instead this is my motivation to get back to work this morning and keep fighting.

Here they describe, much more eloquently than I, why what HHMI did is so problematic. βAnticipatory obedienceβ is the term. I have benefited from HHMI funding and policies, but for that same reason must say: hard to be aspire to be leader of scientific culture, values and excellence while this.

This is catastrophic for US research universities as it ignores the real cost of doing research. The US academic-govβt partnership forged post-WWII is the greatest creator of knowledge in history and is critical to US economic and technological competitiveness.

Excited to share our latest findings on how the phosphoinositide PI4P pool at the trans-Golgi network (TGN) is regulated through a SYS1-ARFRP1-ARL5-ARMH3-PI4KB pathway, in which ARMH3 (also known as C10orf76) acts as an ARL5 effector to activate PI4KB. rdcu.be/d1dZ2
