Thank you!! Adding to tbr
Let me know if you know of any more recent! Iβm constantly searching for comps I tell ya
Within 4 yrs at least π
Thank you!! That is reassuring - I think going too YA with the comps would pose a greater risk than crossing into a different magical creature subgenre (?) lol so this is good feedback
COMP SEARCH: Fantasy folks, can you recommend a book with the same morally conflicted & slightly vengeful voice as Oraya in Serpent and the Wings of Night? My FMC has this voice but I worry comping it since there are no vampires in my novel. #queryingauthors #fantasy

BEYOND THE MIST is TAKEN x LORD OF THE RINGS where the FMC is about as stubborn and driven as Liam Neeson, minus the CIA training. And the One Ring? Well, purchasing that at the festival is what puts the target on Kimβs back in the first place.

I have a duology WIP thatβs only in planning stages. It takes place thousands of years before my main series, at the dawn of the modern era right after the Titans abandoned the realm. Itβs a dark Romantasy enemies to lovers - heβs a necromancer, sheβs a white witch, ready to be corruptedβ¦
Reading #mistborn this morning and realizing I need to up my political infighting game in my WIP.
#writers, what are your February reads?
π§Heat of the Everflame by Penn Cole - sooo close to finishing this TOME
NEXT: The Inadequate Heir by Danielle Jensen
Any writer critique groups on discord or another group collab app for finished and drafting WIPs?
Have had great success with partners from #laurenkaywrites but I want like a groupchat situation. Need much higher accountability.

"The Iris and the Aconite MM Romantasy" "You were my undoing and I am to be yours" photos on a background of ripped and wrinkled paper. Left to right, top row: a ripped photograph (half shows the ML, half shows the MC), someone holding a crown, a poison vial. Second row: a castle in a round picture frame, two hands reaching for each other, and two people embracing each other. Lastly, a photo of a man on top of another man, choking him
βArenβt you a wealth of knowledge?β Kresimir crossed his arms. βWhat does this have to do with anything? Or are you trying to rub it in my face that my parents mightβve been a pair of pyromaniacal cultists?β The King gave him a tired look, his eyes widening slightly, his brows dipping. βYou really believe the worst of me, donβt you, my friend?β βWeβre not friends.β βWe are most definitely something tangential to friendship.β βI believe those are called allies. Acquaintances.β βWe had drinks together.β βBecause I wanted to kill you, you stubborn fool!β They were close enough to feel each otherβs breath now. An inexplicable urge to close the gap surged in Kresimir, potent as his irritation. βIβm stubborn?β the King asked in disbelief. The doors to the office creaked open, and they jumped apart, Kresimirβs heart racing from more than vexation. The text is on a paper texture against a beige background. Illustrated flowers are in the upper left and lower right corners. A locket is in the upper right corner. A kiss mark is in the lower left corner

Nerissa tells herself that itβs justice & absolution sheβs after when she abandons home to save her best friend from Fae abductors β but itβs also the perfect excuse to avoid Andrisβ betrayal. Joining the fray could win her trust back, but Andris has no idea the cost.

Help me decide if I am pitching my book in the right genre.
The romantic subplot isnβt in the query letter, but it is a running thread in the novel. It isnβt the crux of the conflict and the protagonistβs journey, but there is definitely a romantic subplot.
Fantasy, or fantasy romance? #querying
Itβs a convicting love story because their love was so strong and to the bone that they basically withered away into madness by not being together. Even Catherineβs ghost is drawn to Heathcliff.
Itβs a great love story in its grandeur, not in its healthiness or actual goodness.
βSlowly, as the ringlets of light took root, took comfort in her wounds, they began lighting her up everywhere. Her scars began to glow like lightning bolts all around her, her open wounds filling with bright holyfire, cauterizing them and mending them.β

Iβm heavily influenced by Tolkien alone and his imprint on World of Warcraft, DnD, and a various folklores. I like soft magic in my own reading, so the magic is mostly that, but elements of hard magic comes from my own experience with MMORPG gaming mechanics.
One must have an ancestor who traveled to Galdramur when the early magics were wild, untamed and unbound, so their bloodline was imprinted with the magical ability.
In Glynea, the mortal kingdom, only holy knights can wield magic by royal decree. Galdramuran magic is outlawed and warded against.
Different species of Arden:
(1) Elven, (2) Humans, (3) Dwarven: the First species
Fae: descendants of crossbred First species 2/3 with 1
Magi: any spec. whose bloodlines became βinfectedβ with Galdramurβs airborne magical essence in the First Age; now, those who practice/study a discipline of magic
Took out a POV & my manuscript opened wide up. Why give away all the secrets? Had to lock up my MMC and let my FMC sweat a little.

Yes, itβs true β only on two continents do species intermingle a great deal: Galdramur, due to the Leyndar school and Citadel research tower, and on Jorathi, a Dwarven region that became human trade hub & Lowborne refugee settlement. The Highborne (dragon) Elven consider themselves most superior.
There are various classes of magic - elemental, atomic, regenerative, temporal, necromantic, runework, etc. what you have is based entirely on bloodline, and theyβre regionally organized for the most part. It is extremely rare, if at all heard of, to possess multiple classes of magic β¦
Ardenβs magic is jelly. Thereβs a structure but itβs softer magic than Sandersonβs. Magic supply is in the blood and is based on demand - the more you use the more you make. Use too little and youβre septic. Use too much and youβre dehydrated. There are specific classes of magic and their users.
The world of Arden was created by six Titans with infinite magic of varying nature - be it elemental, regenerative, temporal, atomic, or rune spell work. The magic inherent to a species depends on the Titan bloodline oneβs a descendant of. There are also regions that have outlawed magic for β¦ most.
