Not much good news in this report 😥, but glad to see recognition that "The UK is fortunate in having a large amount of information about its biodiversity, collected across a broad spread of species and habitats both by professionals and by expert volunteers"

Read these words from 100 years ago about immigrants in Britain – and see how history is chillingly repeating itself | George Monbiot Shabana Mahmood’s new rights clampdown looks outlandish until we remember that this kind of hardline action is part of our country’s fabric, says George Monbiot

The precedent is eerily, chillingly precise. What the current Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is doing to immigrants and refugees today is almost a carbon copy of what Sir William Joynson-Hicks was doing 100 years ago. And that's not a good thing. My column.

Government accused of caving in to building lobby amid plans to shake up housing sector in England New changes to planning rules would limit scope of English councils and prevent them pursuing improvements to low-carbon homes

Preventing local authorities from pursuing the most ambitious environmental standards that go beyond current, inadequate building regulations for greener homes is shameful & shortsighted, & cheats people out of warm, energy efficient homes👇

A poster of bat facts

A brown long-eared bat can hear a ladybird walking on a leaf

All British bats and their roosts are protected by law

Bats are indicators of a healthy, diverse environment

Bats are the only mammals that can fly

A single pipistrelle can eat 3,000 tiny insects in just one night

All of the 17 breeding species in the UK feed on insects

Bats are gentle, clean and sociable animals

Bats can see, but use their ears to hunt in the dark using echolocation

Bats only have one baby each year, called a pup

With wings folded. a tiny pipistrelle could fit into a matchbox

Bats don't make nest or chew wires wher roosting in building

Gladys Mae West obituary: mathematician who pioneered GPS technology She made key contributions to US cold-war science despite facing huge barriers as a Black woman.

No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientist—because the person felt she did didn’t deserve the recognition.

Which just makes me want to share it again: www.nature.com/articles/d41...
