The CCCC resolution affirming students' and teachers' right to refuse generative AI in the writing classroom passed by an overwhelming majority at the #4C26 Annual Business Meeting this past Friday, March 6.

I've tried to hold to that as much as reviewers/editors will let me.

If I don't give space to acknowledging the perceived utility of a technology, its not because I'm ignorant to those claims. I've probably spent a lot of time reading and considering them (and even spent time using the tech, too).

Early in my career, someone told me that its better to be clear and direct when discussing harms rather than watering them down out of a sense of responsibility to balance a discussion because tech cheerleaders already have enough avenues to make their points.

* CEOs saying AI is why they're firing people
* Traders who have long known the market is over-valued using AI as an excuse to finally sell

the "open source LLMs running locally" idea is very naive

nobody in the OS community has the resources to build an LLM "from scratch" - mainly ppl use a variant of Llama - meta's LLM - trained on stolen data that was cleaned by underpaid workers in global south - and thus exhibit the same biases

The only narratives the media now accept about AI place all the agency in *it* - the tech can be force for evil or a force for good, but we can’t be a force for either anymore. Only tech is permitted to bend the arc of the universe. Only it shapes the future. Human agency is banned from the story.
