Innovators became rent seekers and are very aggrieved that they’re no longer treated like innovators.
Sorry the public doesn’t see the world’s biggest companies and richest people pushing enshittified, mediocre, or damaging products as plucky start-ups doing exciting things. But whose fault is that?

This is one of the scariest things about AI to me: if you replace all of your beginners, you have no experts.

My fingers holding up a folded piece of sticky tape with a dead mosquito inside it

A mosquito just tried to get me but I got it first and then I entombed it in sticky tape and will now bury it so that it survives for millions of years and future humans can bring back today’s humans and let them roam around a fenced park eating the tourists of the future.

Life finds a way.

So if you'd like to follow a podcast that's enthusiastic about #linguistics, could you check out @lingthusiasm.bsky.social?

The original schematic drawing for the patent application of what would become the most common toilet paper holder. It depicts the roll of toilet paper used as having its roll over the top and not under from the back.

Dear young men,

I've been married to an amazing woman for nearly 23 years, now. Here is a list of things this person owes me:

1. Not a goddamn thing. Not food, not comfort, not sex.

I'm in a relationship, not a fucking lease. We give to each other out of love, respect, and joy.

Learn that.

Automated systems to which we delegate life or death decisions need to have SO MUCH REDUNDANCY because the cost of getting it wrong is so high.

"Go fast and break things" attitudes are cute for code. Not cute for real life engineering.

Getting stuck while we're writing is a feature, not a bug. It's the point of the exercise. It's what happens when we are trying to express something we have not expressed before. That friction forces us to make the tools we need to understand and express it. Getting stuck is how we make meaning.

Even accepting the premise that AI produces useful writing (which no one should), using AI in education is like using a forklift at the gym. The weights do not actually need to be moved from place to place. That is not the work. The work is what happens within you.

In the last few decades, we have detected thousands of planets outside of our solar system. They did not suddenly appear at the time we found them. No one calls it an "exoplanet epidemic." The planets were always there, just previously undiscovered. This is a tweet about autism.
