She’d Never Changed Her Gender Marker. Kansas Invalidated Her License Anyway. — Assigned A trans Kansas resident recently changed her name but not her gender marker on her license, fearing what Kansas may do if she did. The Kansas DMV still flagged her ID.

This story, from @natezuke.bsky.social, is absolutely wild. A trans woman who never changed her gender marker was issued a letter invalidating her license. At the DMV they cut up her license, which had an "M" marker.

once again, i am begging everyone to turn some of their energy towards abolishing the concept of legal gender. there is no reason gender has to be on driver's licenses and passports, and for most of history, it wasn't!

As of tonight, licenses of trans people across Kansas are being invalidated en masse, enabling the overnight criminalization of an entire group of people for going about our lives. It’s often said you never know when you’re living through history, so let me assure you: that’s what’s happening now.

The name change and gender marker change process is already full of burdens—we hope that this change will make the process easier for trans people in the U.S. to find the information and support they need.

Webpage on the Namesake website with large text saying “What is the reason you’re changing your name?”

There is a text box with the label “Reason for name change” and a banner that says:

What do I write? Provide a basic reason —no need to go into detail. Examples:
• "I want a name which aligns with my gender identity."
• "This is the name everyone knows me by."
• "This is my preferred name and I wish to obtain proper documentation."
• "I am transgender."

We’ve also redesigned our forms to ask one question per page, making it easier to focus and reducing the chance of error.

When I asked other trans journalists about how they’d transition in this political moment, most of the advice boiled down to: Do whatever makes you feel safe and happy. You don’t need to tell every person you’ve ever quoted in an article. You can also not tell a soul. Different approaches work for different journalists, each with their own tradeoffs depending on your personality and how frequently you need to talk with sources.

Trans perspectives and stories have never been more important. And trans reporters need a safe perch from which to write these stories. Not every trans person changes their name. Some trans people simply like their birth name. Sometimes changing your byline is not possible, either because of the risk of abuse from newsroom colleagues or because an outlet has a policy that prohibits such changes or lacks a clear policy or procedure for how to do so. In some countries, being transgender is criminalized (even to the point of sometimes being punishable by death), which obviously complicates a journalist’s ability to live openly.

But if a trans journalist can and wants to change their byline, it can be a welcome boost to their mental health and safety. “When you have access to updating your name and affirming your gender to your name, you feel better during the course of the day,” says Bellamy-Walker. “If you don’t feel safe, it’s going to be difficult to do your job.”

This fight isn't over. Our case challenging President Trump's executive order will still move forward.

In the meantime anyone who applies for a new, corrected, or replacement passport, or for a passport renewal, is at risk of having their passport issued bearing the sex they were assigned at birth.

DONALD J. TRUMP, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED
STATES, ET AL. v. ASHTON ORR, ET AL.
ON APPLICATION FOR STAY
[November 6, 2025]
This case concerns an Executive Branch policy requiring
all new passports to display an individual’s biological sex at
birth. The United States District Court for the District of
Massachusetts preliminarily enjoined the Government
from enforcing the policy, and the First Circuit declined to
stay the injunction pending appeal. The Government then
filed this stay application. Applying our familiar stay fac-
tors at this preliminary stage, we grant the application.

BREAKING: The Supreme Court will allow the Trump administration to enforce its anti-trans and anti-nonbinary passport policy during litigation.

The unsigned, four-paragraph order effectively reverses two lower-court decisions. The Democratic appointees dissent.

Airlines Told to Disregard Gender-Neutral ‘X’ on U.S. Passports and Add ‘M’ or ‘F’

Per NYT: Airlines are now required to disregard gender-neutral 'X’ markers on passports when passengers check in and replace them with an 'M' for male, or an 'F' for female marker

🤨 "The new rule amounts to a data-collection change and does not affect passengers’ ability to fly."
