A wide shot of The Scarlett Letter's exhibition corner, comprised of two large pinboards with photographs, captions, and pride flags pinned on. In front is a table with a selection of books and magazines on the theme of SW rights and LGBT+ pride.
Caring about the lives, health and safety of SWs is an ESSENTIAL part of supporting the rights of LGBTQ+ people.
Come visit us any day in Pride month to see our exhibit in person, and pick up something from our recommended reading table!
While not a queer identity in and of itself, SW is a survival strategy for often the poorest and most marginalised. Due to structural discrimination, LGBTQ+ people are overrepresented within the sex worker community.
As part of their activism for trans people following Stonewall, Marsha P Johnson and Sylvia Rivera founded STAR (Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries), primarily catering to homeless queer youth who were very likely to be selling sx to meet their basic needs.

Pride and SW rights go hand in hand. Without them, "Pride" as we know it today simply would not exist. SWs participated in nearly all of the iconic queer uprisings we commemorate today, including Stonewall.
Images of the occupation of Saint-Nizier Church in Lyon pinned to a pinboard
More than 100 SWs occupied the church to protest against police harassment, unsafe working conditions, and the lack of legal protections.
Their actions helped galvanise the SW rights movement, and later began being commemorated around the world as International Sx Workers' Day.
Red hand-written sign on a pin board which reads 'This pride month June 2nd marks the 50th anniversary of International Sex Workers' Day'. Underneath is the start of an exhibition with pinned images and captions.
Today, 2 June 2025, marks FIFTY YEARS of International Sx Workers' Day!
This Pride Month, we'll have an exhibit up all month featuring the 1975 occupation of Saint Nizier Church in Lyon, France.
Pride month is here!
Join us tonight to celebrate a community without whom "Pride" as we know it today would quite literally not exist βπ³οΈβπ
