The fact that they are now constantly changing points to something new going on - possibly something like AI giving more personalised results or constant testing / reranking. Something has change, and its worldwide.

Bots might be causing this to happen but these charts are based on how much the SERP changes for a set of given search terms and was in the past only volatile when a big event happened or there was a major change in the way the SERP was put together.

Note - hat tip to @sarahblocksidge.bsky.social who spotted the current ongoing volatility and posted that on mastodon prompting me to look back and see if there was any seasonal change - and oh yes there is!
