I have submitted my 4th novel to 10 UK literary agents. The probability of securing an agent is very low; if successful, the prospect of a publishing deal is not at all certain; and, if signed, it will take 1-2 years to publish.
"The game is afoot," Holmes said, rubbing his hands.

Trump has ordered government agencies to stop using Anthropic AI tools
The move announced on social media comes after a standoff between Anthropic's boss and the US Department of Defense.
Stranger than fiction, or what? Trumps blackmailing an AI company for covert operations reflects one of the events in my latest book Choke currently out being queried with UK literary agents.

AI companies will fail. We can salvage something from the wreckage | Cory Doctorow
AI is asbestos in the walls of our tech society, stuffed there by monopolists run amok. A serious fight against it must strike at its roots
I know this is about AI but I was thinking of the 'we must keep accepting the role of fossil fuels' crowd as I read this:
βThere is no alternativeβ is a cheap rhetorical slight. Itβs a demand dressed up as an observation. βThere is no alternativeβ means: βstop trying to think of an alternative.β

Elite Australian firefighter Miro Jackson makes a gruesome discovery. Why didn't the farmer's personal AI, his Other, tell them to get out?

The Quantum Realm Trilogy by Robert P. Edwards
Ok, thatβs done. Moved from Australia to the UK βlock, stock and barrelβ as the natives say.
Now time to sell more books.
Oh, and try to get an agent and publishing deal.

A map of northern north america overlaid with the Environment Canada weather warnings for June 6 at 2:30pm MDT.
There's a patch of southwestern BC from Vancouver Island to the Okanagan interior coloured grey.
A huge stretch of the provinces is coloured red through northern BC, northern Alberta, Northern Saskatchewan, Northern and central-eastern Manitoba, Western Ontario, and north-central Quebec with serious air quality warnings.
Parts of northern BC, northern Alberta, northern Ontario, southern Ontario including Toronto and Ottawa, southern Quebec including Montreal, and the Atlantic Provinces (New Brunswick and Labrador in particular) are coloured grey with air quality warnings.
A small patch of Nova Scotia in the south-east of Canada on the Atlantic ocean is coloured yellow with a severe thunderstorm watch.
All these air quality warnings are due to wildfire smoke.
So... every single weather warning on this map except the grey in the southwest corner of BC (early season +30C heat) and the yellow in Nova Scotia in the south east on the map (severe storm watch) is about wildfire smoke.

A little oversold (like X/Twitter). The key point is that anyone who has their own website domain can change their Bluesky handle and be verified by simply adding a DNS entry. Neat.

If you haven't noticed before, the Spotify algo has confirmation bias--it keeps playing you the same artists over and over. For me it was Fleetwood Mac although I've never liked them. I recently worked out how you can tell it to never play a specific artist ever again. Small wins.

The secret joys of schadenfreude
It gives us gleeful moments of guilty pleasure. But finding fun in the misfortunes of others is also an emotion that plays a crucial part in binding society together
Schadenfreude, or the joy at others misfortune, reflects the absurdity of our attempts to appear in control in a world forever slipping out of our grasp. It testifies to our need to not feel alone in our failures, to seek the consolations of being part of a community of the failed. Do you need it?

We had some Polish relatives visit a few weeks back. I served my signature Spagbol made with meat-free mince and didn't tell them. They loved it (and they're Polish - who's national dish is sausage). The product was cheaper than real beef, too. IMO the challenge is 90% psychological.

Have not eaten beef lamb or pork for over a year now, and cut down on dairy. Being mostly vegan most of the time has been much easier than I thought it would. Meat-free products are growing. In developed nations (that do the most harm ecologically) the solutions are out there.

Average House Size in Australia: Why Smaller Is Smarter
The average house size of new builds in Australia has been hovering at 240 square metres for the past decade. Here are 4 reasons why small Australian houses are better.
Fourth Law of Sustainability: Live in Smaller Spaces
The cause of the energy crisis is not scarcity: it is moral ignorance. We don't know how to use energy. It is about the waste of human energy as much as it is about the waste of fossil fuel energy.

What does spending a long time in space do to the human body?
Prolonged periods in orbit can alter an astronaut's body in some surprising ways, changing their muscles, brains and even their gut bacteria.
It's good news the stranded astronauts are getting rescued by SpaceX. However, are humans designed for Space? After all, it took a million years for us to adapt to life on Earth.
Is a SpaceX Mars shot even feasible? Or belongs in the realm of science fiction and fantasy?
