Americans have a strong tendency to essentialize things. Ideas, people, nations, even concrete objective things like maths are essentialized, and the reductionism is exactly what people mean when they say american education only teaches kids how to read a 'vibe' rather than how to READ
the essentialization is also why americans tend to pick and choose individual traits that define a person i.e. hard worker, parent, gay, romantic, idiotic, coloured, white, insane, intelligent, so on and so forth, and the truth is every person is a gestalt existance
this is why we should push against usage of words that are *definitive* of a persons existence. it's not ok to call people retarded because it means that's who they are in their entirety, it's a word used by oppressive governments to control disabled people, not because it's a nasty word
the same is also true for sanist terms or other ableist terms, and yes, that includes calling people stupid. stupidity isn't real because intelligence isn't real, you can't quantify it. IQ has always been white supremacist bullshit and to push either is to reinforce it
when the adults in my childhood made me feel worthless and retarded, it wasn't because of calling me the R word, it was because they made me feel like i was less than my peers for being autistic, for struggling with adhd, and for everytime i was called a retard i was called stupid 1,000 other times
