Starfleet Academy's first season seemed to whipsaw between truly great episodes and ones that left me scratching me head. But 2 things make me hopeful about next season: 1. Holly Hunter remains incredible and 2. the season's best episodes featured the show's creator (Gaia Violo) as a credited writer

A screencap from the Hamilton musical with the head of young Hamnet from the Hamnet film pasted over Lin Manuel Miranda's, with text that reads "My name is William Shakespeare's Hamnet Son / William Shakespere's Hamnet Son / And if it be now, it is not to come / But just you wait, just you wait."
I don't know who the audience for this joke is, but I made it anyway. #Hamnet #Hamilton

Me: Well a tornado watch doesn't mean there'll be a tornado
My Wife: Yeah, but it was like a Scorsese movie -- watching for hours but nothing happens

A comment on an September 2021 episode of Saturday Night Live, hosted by Elon Musk, which reads, "Ah Elon Mulk. Finally the answer to that eternal question, 'What if a Mike Myers character didn't know it was a Mike Myers character?'"
Holy hell, I'd completely forgotten about this comment.

I'm about an hour into Avatar 2, and it reminds me of those middling X-Men sequels. You know the ones where there's such a tone of grave seriousness in every scene despite the total goofiness of everything happening, and where the dialogue and performances are nowhere near good enough to overcome it

Wonder Man is easily the best Marvel show since WandaVision. Yahya Abdul-Mateen and Ben Kingsley are absolute magic together. Andrew Guest hasn't missed a beat since his days writing for Community. And the series's funny but sincere take on acting careers and true friendship was outstanding.

The profound sense of millennial exhaustion at the fact that we're doing this all again; that we seemingly learned nothing from the last time; that this time, they didn't even bother trying to convince us before launching us headlong into another bloody conflict

A screen cap of a Facebook status from 4 years ago that reads: "I need something to take my mind off the sadness of a steady escalation in tension and threats turning into all-out war. Time to watch my next episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
The cosmic irony of stumbling across this in my memories today.

The top panel shows Mon Mothma and Erskin Semaj in live action from the series Andor, and the bottom panel shows the same two characters in animated form from an episode of Star Wars Rebels.
Star Wars' approach to continuity has been hit or miss. But I have to say, it's pretty cool that Andor, the franchise's take on a serious adult drama, went out of its way to line up one of its biggest plot points with an episode of the all-ages animated series on Disney XD from 8 years earlier.

Great piece on the ways the original Pokemon games feel a little archaic but also still have a lot to offer us. They're almost a postcard from an era when Red and Blue got to just be games and not the seeds of a mutlimedia empre, and the review captures that sense very well.

Benicio del Toro standing on this tip does while holding his jacket out like bird wings on the middle of a desert highway, next to a red car which is flanked by a police vehicle.
There's a lot of little moments I like from One Battle After Another, but Benicio del Toro's little dance during his field sobriety test may legitimately be my favorite of them.

I know it was a long time ago, but it happened *to* Christians! And yet, the party that so vociferously claims the mantle of Christianity and "the West" demonizes immigrants under the exact same brand of xenophobia that led to the unjust blame and torture of their forebears. It's maddening.

It was all a canard to distract from his own mismanagement of the Empire. "It wasn't me and my cronies! It was the foreigners! They're the cause of all your problems!" And I cannot believe that it's 2000 years later, and we're still doing this same, sorry song and dance.

Everybody knows that Nero fiddled while Rome burned, right? It turns out that's false. But what he did do was blame the Great Fire of Rome on the Christians because they were (a.) non-citizens from other lands who (b.) spoke foreign languages and (c.) practiced a religion that the Romans found weird

I have qualms about it too. Though I think it's hard to disentangle "they're gay and isn't that funny!" from "the homophobic right champions these guys as paragons of traditional masculinity, so isn't the fact that they made a homoerotic exercise reel funny?"

A meme that blends the Simpsons with the movie Flow. In the first panel, a cat declares, "Aurora borealis? At this time of year, at this time of day, in this part of the country, localized entirely on top of this stone pillar?" The second panel features a secretarybird dressed as Principal Skinner in front of a cosmic swirl saying, "Yes."
"Did you make this meme?"
"Of course I did. Who else would?"

The 'Tasting History' series is great, if for no other reason than you learn all these fun little tidbits. For instance, it turns out that Emperor Augustus Caesar was one of Ancient Rome's earliest devotees of Girl Dinner.
