Last night's #2020MMM was local and #FloridaMan saved the day for gopher tortoise!
I've rescued a freshwater slider that someone "released" at the beach. Such a great story and lesson. RIP cuttlefish. #TeamGT 🐢

All that is left in the now silent clearing is the raccoon
dog, licking the last of the worm from his lips. #SlimyYetSatisfying His hunger is slightly diminished but not abated. He bows his head and starts snuffling in the leaf litter again. An unaware victor. #2020MMM

Slowly chewing, the raccoon dog watches as the kodkod, having missed his mark, slinks off into bushes. The female pudu chases after her terrified offspring, and the male pudu crashed through the undergrowth, galloping in the other direction.

The pudu fawn leaps away, the kodkod's paws hitting the ground instead of firm flesh. The male & female pudu bound away from each other barking in fear.
The raccoon dog looks up at the commotion, pulling the last bit of the earthworm he is slurping up out of the ground. #2020MMM

And closer still he creeps. Finally with a gigantic bound out of the shadows, KODKOD launches himself at the pudu fawn!!!!!

Being highly adaptable, the raccoon dog is happy in Chiloé National Park, whose vegetation though unfamiliar doesn’t feel too strange & the temperature is pleasant. He heeds the ever present call
of his belly, & heads towards a clearing, sniffing as he goes.#2020MMM

It would beHOOVE us to wish him well in his search for a mate. Pudu face a number of threats including habitat loss, getting hit by cars, & dog attacks. Consequently their numbers are declining and the IUCN has declared Pudu to be near threatened.#2020MMM

For this battle we are back in Chile, where the pudu has
#HomeHabitatAdvantage. Last battle the pudu was intent on finding a mate, but got a bit distracted by a hedgehog. But free from such frivolities, he is once again on the sniff for a lady.

The raccoon dog has had easy victories involving snacks (RIP my favorite venomous shrew) and snuggling. #LivingHisBestLife. This lack of serious food so far puts him at his slender March weight of 3.3 lbs or ~13 stoats and about half the size of the pudu. #2020MMM
