Well, I didn’t find out about #crustmas or #25daysofCrustmas until the end, but here’s a pre-fired #lobster #fusedglass piece I created a while ago for a #sciart gift exchange on Twitter. It was slumped into a sushi plate. Have no idea if the person I sent it to liked it or not!

The final day of #25DaysofCrustmas and we have the largest land living crab Birgus latro- the Coconut Crab. This one is from Chumbe Island in Zanzibar where the population is growing year on year due to protection from the Ranger team there.

The image is a snap of a page in my logbook.

It is cropped to show the germane section. The block on white text reads:

“We had a laugh squeezing through narrow sharp rust encrusted gaps. The micro-life was fantastic, zillions of tiny shrimps, about 2-3mm long & these WEIRD pink creatures about 25mm long, looking like a cross between an ant & a praying mantis. I couldn’t quite work out what they were up to, but they looked a little bit like this:

<here there’s a little line drawing that looks exactly like a caprellid amphipod, *if you squint really hard and look the other way while using your imagination*>.

Tiny mussels were feeding…”

So far #InverteArt has disappointed, with amateurish daubs of jellyfish, beetles etc.

I’ve posted this to inspire you all to greater heights.

I’d not heard of caprellid amphipods before and only found out what they were years later.

#25DaysOfCrustmas is also apt.

Merry Christmas, everybody!

Need to squeeze in a Nightmare before #Crustmas gift on #Crustmas Eve: the eggs of a parasitic #copepod (Splanchnotrophidae) growing out of a Babakina festiva #nudibranch! These parasitic copepods are species-specific, & this one hasn't been described. #25DaysofCrustmas

Merry #Crustmas Eve, friends! Here are Buoy #barnacles (Dosima fascicularis)! They're pleustonic (living at the sea-water interface) goose barnacles that drift the ocean using floats they make or find- like Velella! Sometimes we get lucky enough to find them when they wash ashore. #25DaysofCrustmas

The penultimate day of #25DaysofCrustmas and we have a Bubble Coral Shrimp - Vir philippinensis. This is found pretty much all across the Indo-Pacific region where it is associated with Plerogyra sinuosa corals.

So it’s day 23 of #25DaysofCrustmas and we have another porcelain crab - but this one is hanging out on a colourful Dendronephthya coral. Only a few more days to go now - but I believe #Invertefest starts soon.

The Bloody Pebble Crab (Leptodius sanguineus) is today's Hawaiian #Crustmas crustacean! It's one of the most common shoreline crabs in Hawaii – I found this one tidepooling in Maui instead of snorkeling. Pāpaʻi is the general word for "crab" in Hawaiian. #25DaysofCrustmas

Here's a #Crustmas cutie – a shy little Convex Crab or Marbled Stone Crab (kukuau in Hawaiian) (Carpilius convexus). It's found in the Indo-Pacific, from Hawaii to the Red Sea & South Africa. I found this one 6 years ago while snorkeling in Maui. #25DaysofCrustmas

This Sculptured Slipper Lobster (ula-pehu or ula-pápapa in Hawaiian) (Parribacus antarcticus) is one of my favorite Hawaiian #Crustmas finds, spotted while snorkeling with a good friend in the deep pools of the Kapoho Tidepools 10 yrs ago. Alas, the #tidepools are no longer there. #25DaysofCrustmas

Day 16 is upon us for #25DaysofCrustmas even though it may look like a Christmas bauble it is in fact a tiny Amphipod belonging to the family Cyproideidae. Divers often refer to these as Ladybugs and they are super tiny and come in many colours.

Spiderwitchers (family Munnidae) under the microscope for #Crustmas! The Spiderwitchers are an essentially cosmopolitan, shallow-water family, & are detritivores, feeding on decomposing organic matter. I found this pair while doing my graduate work on mussel bed communities. #25DaysofCrustmas

Today for the #25DaysofCrustmas we're venturing to a shrimpy branch of the family tree. Meet Taylor's Coastal Shrimp (Heptacarpus taylori), which I often find in the #tidepools. As a species in Thoridae, these are also known as broken-back shrimp. They come in festive #Crustmas colors too!
