Once upon a time I ‘studied’ manga for reading practice but also, as I read a few different series, they were good for understanding cultural signals, especially through the seasons. Some are surprising hits. 1/3

Today’s selection, a children’s picture book by Kusaba and Yamanaka, depicts the Nobel Peace Prize winning speech by Hiroshima survivor and anti-nuclear advocate, Setsuko Thurlow. The cover is mostly yellow with a depiction of a child’s face, looking despairing.

Speaking of philosophy (yesterday), here’s another. So many books with 哲学 (tetsugaku) in the title. Although usually translated as philosophy, in this case it can mean ‘thought’ too, broadly. My favourite manga artist. 1/3
