Wiki Education gave a shout-out to our Board Director Pancho Ramirez for his work filling in #disability content gaps on Wikipedia: lnk.to/Panchowiki. He is an #AACUser who communicates using an airmouse or a laser pointer and letter board. @wikieducation.bsky.social

Being disabled isn’t all bad, yes it can really fucking suck, but at the same time it can also be a good thing. Disability pride exists, but that doesn’t mean it is all good.

Anyway Tourette’s causes chronic and acute pain, disables me a LOT in all areas of my life, and is a main reason I can’t go out alone.
Yet I wouldn’t trade it, it has brought me friendships, sport, helped with communication etc.

But meeting others with TS opened up the world of AAC and that is another great thing. I can better now and actually communicate more now than pre AAC.

Please be patient with people who are struggling with their speech and the symptoms of alogia.
I get it can be frustrating sometimes when communicating with someone with alogia, but it’s very frustrating dealing with it.

Representation is vital to #inclusion. That’s why we’re thrilled to see a Barbie #AACUser! Barbie and our colleagues at the Autistic Self Advocacy Network teamed up to create this #autistic Barbie who uses a pink AAC device, noise-canceling headphones, and a fidget.

I have been working on customising my #AACdevice today and this is my phone version. I also have a larger board for my tablet.
There’s still a lot of customising left to do, I want to switch out all the standard emojis, but I’m excited about how it’s looking so far.

My non-speaking son requests Clair de Lune every single night by typing it on his AAC. Every. Night. I will never complain. What song does your child request on repeat? #AACUser
Learning my new AAC device is brutal and frustrating, I just do not have the motor planning. Sitting in a coffee shop listening to conversations and trying to reproduce it with proloquo2go is exhausting. The crap some people say is astonishing. #AACuser

He is laughing along with President Obama, Attorney General Holder, & other disability leaders. We love showcasing our community in our #VisibleAAC photo bank. Any #AACUser who wants to share a photo of yourself &/or your #AAC, email info@communicationfirst.org with PHOTOS in the subject line, or you can hashtag #VisibleAAC if you post. You may appear in our comms efforts!

As a full time AAC user when my device has a bit of a breakdown it’s more than just an inconvenience. It’s my communication.
Yes I have some back ups but it’s not the same as my actual device.

Do you have any questions about AAC?
Anything at all. No questions are silly questions.

It takes practice & hard work, I struggle with things like copying and pasting, editing. I’d like to build up my speed and build up fluency and accuracy. I have written this whole post using eye gaze only.

People who think that AAC will send people backwards in their communication really have no understanding how freeing using AAC can be.
I can now communicate in ways I never could with mouth words.
I’m 35 and can now order at a restaurant. AAC is freeing

I told someone that #mutism fixed my #impulsive tendency to #say whatever I'm thinking, but that's not true. I still #think things and immediately #express them, but people can't #understand me anymore, or the #time it takes to #type my #thoughts lets me #reconsider.
